Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called on lawmakers in the Buckeye State this week to pass a series of reforms aimed at blunting the spike in gun-related violence.

The reforms are part of a larger plan called “STRONG Ohio” that DeWine introduced in October of 2019 in the wake of the Dayton massacre.

“I’m going to keep saying it. We have to, in Ohio, get tougher on repeat violent offenders,” DeWine stated on Tuesday, according to local media.

“We have to get tougher on those who are convicted felons who have absolutely no business having a gun. We need to do this. We have pending in the state legislature a bill that would do that and I would urge my friends in the general assembly to take that bill up,” he added.

DeWine renewed his call for the bill after 40 people were shot, 21 fatally, in a six-day period from Sept. 1 through Labor Day.

The bullet points of the “STRONG Ohio” legislation are as follows:

  • Create a process in Ohio law, similar to the current probate court process that directs those suffering from severe mental health conditions into court-ordered treatment, to give hospitals and courts a better ability to help those who are legally declared to be a danger to themselves or others due to drug dependency or chronic alcoholism;
  • Ensure that citizens have full due process at all probate court hearings;
  • Ensure that those legally declared by a judge to be a danger to themselves or others do not have access to firearms;
  • Give family members of those who may be a danger to themselves or others because of drug dependency or chronic alcoholism the ability to more easily petition the probate court for court-ordered treatment;
  • Mandate that law enforcement agencies and courts enter certain protection orders and arrest warrants for serious crimes into state and federal law enforcement databases to ensure more accurate background check results;
  • Create a new private-sale background check process that will increase the number of background checks conducted in Ohio while also protecting the privacy of law-abiding gun owners;
  • Create a legal safe harbor for firearms sellers who require private-sale background checks;
  • Increase penalties for those who sell or provide a firearm to someone legally prohibited from possessing a gun;
  • Give judges a range of sentences for felony cases in which a gun was either possessed, brandished, or used;
  • Increase the penalty for those who are found with a gun while legally prohibited from possessing a firearm;
  • Increase the penalty for selling a gun to a minor;
  • Increase penalties for straw purchases and knowingly possessing a straw-purchased gun.

Proponents of the bill have positioned it as a fair compromise between those on either side of the gun divide.

“I understand that this bill probably doesn’t go far enough for some and too far for others. That said, this bill needs and should pass with bi-partisan support,” said Senator Matt Dolan (R-Chagrin Falls), the bill’s sponsor. “The victims of gun violence deserve action, and a society fearful of future violence can be crippling. This bill addresses these concerns and will help make Ohio safer.”

    Jim Renacci is running against DeWine, he’s pro gun all the way and he has my vote!

  • Ej harbet September 26, 2020, 7:46 am

    Release dangerous people because of covid
    Then when they do what they do.
    Blame the law abiding and take away freedom. I remember when ohio was not free and people regained their rights. Well I hope you keep your rights and fix your tyrant problem ohio.

  • rsmalt September 22, 2020, 10:41 am

    Brilliant. Add MORE laws…..because everyone who’s broken all of the existing laws will SURELY obey all of these new ones!

  • a11four1 September 20, 2020, 12:50 am

    Gun laws; too many incremental aspects, and probably more than there are for actual criminal activities.

    Let’s compare this to just one thing, say automobiles. I work between Missouri and California. There aren’t too many basic differences, though CA’s are broader.
    How about Stop, Yield, Merge, Speed or School Zone signs, signal lights, exhaust made louder, overly tinted windows, lowered suspensions, heavily amplified sound systems, aggressive driving…
    Tell us any place those are legal, while guaranteed illegal in more places.
    Now, relay where those are not seen [underlined] every day.

    • T October 8, 2020, 12:59 am

      Hmmm ya lost me…

  • JohnL September 18, 2020, 10:13 pm

    Just what they need! More gun laws to add to the thousands they don’t enforce now!

    • Stephen September 19, 2020, 4:21 pm

      Exactly. Just more noise and innuendo from self righteous controlling politicians.

  • Comanche September 18, 2020, 4:23 pm

    Multiple laws were broken by these violent criminals so I asked you what makes you think passing new laws will solve the problem? (it won’t) it’s only more infringement on the law-abiding citizens of Ohio. the Bloomberg’s and the Giffords won’t be satisfied until the 2nd amendment is completely infringed and gone.

  • Christopher Chason September 18, 2020, 3:01 pm

    Agreed! I have tried – seemingly in vain – for MANY YEARS too convince sheeple, STOP VOTING BY NAME RECOGNITION!
    LEARN about these clowns who are on the ballot, FIRST! Find out WHO THEY ARE and what they believe, and WHO is supporting them!
    THEN vote!
    But what do I know?

    • T October 8, 2020, 1:02 am

      Agree totally. Ya know what you get when you don’t know the clowns you’re voting for on the ballot? OCASIO CORTEZ! Hahaha

  • Christopher Chason September 18, 2020, 2:53 pm

    Well, I am calling for GOV Control! The GOV is too big, too powerful and in the hands of MORONS! It is too dangerous to We The People and must be regulated! All Politicians should be stored with a MUZZLE installed!

  • Roger September 18, 2020, 2:50 pm

    Try locking up criminals. You have sent the message that anything goes. Idiot buffoons like you Governor are the problem. Not guns imbecile!

  • Brian Graziaplena September 18, 2020, 1:55 pm

    Stupid idiot… they just don’t get it. But of course the gun-grabbers don’t really care about quelling violent gun use… rather they just want to disarm the majority of gun owners [the law abiding ones]!!!

  • r. stephen shepas September 18, 2020, 11:50 am

    what a RINO. hope Ohio votes him out.
    another double speak law so vague and subjective that if passed,
    politicians can interpert it to enforce any agenda that they want.

    • Christopher Chason September 18, 2020, 3:03 pm

      Yup. You nailed it! THAT is the game they play!

  • PC September 18, 2020, 11:47 am

    How about this? Severe penalties and non-negotiable prison time once convicted of a firearm offense. No plea bargaining for murder, armed robbery, assault with intent to kill, etc.

    Death sentence

    Have a weapon during the commission of a crime. Give them time to think about their choices.

    Charge people and convicted them if they falsify information on 4473’s.

    • Rick September 18, 2020, 3:24 pm

      Careful there. A “crime” can be a parking or driving violation.

  • Mark - IN. September 18, 2020, 11:33 am

    The intent of OUR 2nd Amendment is to remove tyrants both foreign and domestic, male or female, no matter who they are. If they’re politicians think of it as…recalling…them, so to speak. They may win battles here and there but more importantly is that We The People win the war. This guy declared war on the people of Ohio that he was elected to serve. They should…recall…him, so to speak.

  • D.J. September 18, 2020, 11:14 am

    As a resident of the above mentioned state , I feel it my
    duty to inform those from outside what the situation is here .

    Mr. DeWine has behaved as an omnipotent dictator from
    the time the ” Kung – flu ” made its appearance in the state .
    Daily , he appears to become more intent to maintain a form of
    total control upon the citizens here . My belief is that his
    religious preference plays no little part in his behavior .

    The economy of this state suffers greatly from his misguided ,
    and irrational decisions . He has taken great pains to thwart
    growth , at a time of unequaled expansion .

    RINO ? Without any doubt to a thinking individual . He ,
    like a former Gov. of our state , is determined to shunt our
    current POUS at every turn , as well as the people of his state .

    This current advancement of legislation merely proves the
    point that I am attempting to drive home . The man suffers
    from an irrational form of Meglomania that may require
    professional services .

    Ohio has always been a firearm friendly state . This is due
    in large part , to a basic concept of personal responsibility and
    accountability . As well as the understanding that MOST of us
    are mature enough to handle said accountability . We do not
    need guardians or babysitters to go about our daily lives .

    However , there are those , like Mr. DeWine , that are more
    than ready to assume that role , citizens be damned !

    God help the buckeye state !
    Impeach this tyrant !

  • Edward Hopf September 18, 2020, 10:57 am

    Enforce the laws that are on the books. You don’t need more laws. It only hurts the honest citizens. Criminals don’t get their guns by normal means. They steal them and sell them on the streets.

  • George Paul September 18, 2020, 10:09 am

    What part of A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed, what part of this is so hard for these politicians/idiots to understand?????????????? Despite all of our current laws the bad guys always are able to be armed, so why pile on more laws the police are not allowed to enforce, lol. Seems President Trump is the only person fighting for our rights. God help us

  • Richard Bartley September 18, 2020, 9:43 am

    Pushing gun control was why he lost his senate seat. Pushing gun control again should/will end his political career for good this time.

  • Roger September 18, 2020, 9:06 am

    Do you ever leave your basement? Take your stupid ideas and walk down the streets unarmed and unprotected in CAMDEN, ATLANTIC CITY, WILDWOOD, ASBURY PARK,- Monmouth IRVINGTON, Essex BRIDGETON, Cumberland NEWARK—–IDIOT!!

  • BigC September 18, 2020, 8:46 am

    How about we enforce the laws we already have?? Why are these punk thugs allowed to run around shooting people??

    • Bad Penguin September 18, 2020, 9:07 am

      They should criminalize the DA’s reducing of gun charges to get the Perp to plead guilty to a lesser offense so they save on going to trial.

  • Pete Faz September 18, 2020, 8:32 am

    Try controlling the feral animals of Ohio instead of the good people

  • Lon James Loren September 18, 2020, 8:30 am

    These laws are already on the books and should be enforced. The new legislation appears to be a back door to a RED FLAG LAW. Gun control pushed down the throats of it’s honest citizens is always a BAD idea!!

  • Willian September 18, 2020, 7:33 am

    Instead of passing more laws to hurt honest gun owners, trying enforcing the laws and locking up the criminals. Yes that might mean arresting minorities, but they are the criminals and need to be locked up. The black victims if so called police brutality should not have been walking the streets. They died resisting lawfully arrest.

  • JT September 18, 2020, 7:07 am

    Typical American approach to a problem. This is a software (people) problem and this politician is looking for a hardware (more laws) solution. This problem is caused by people and cultural rot, not a lack of laws that already address the problem. More than anything this is bad leadership lacking in both creativity and serious thought.

    • Big Jim September 18, 2020, 8:33 am

      You can’t legislate away evil no matter how many laws you pass. So the good guys are punished again. Nice goin Matt Dolan.

  • The SGM September 18, 2020, 7:00 am

    Sounds like a good start, BUT, ‘Bullet Points’ or a synopsis of any legislation may sound good on the surface the devil is in the unread details. While some may jump on the bandwagon they do so at risk because unread or unstudied legislation always carries unintended consequences once it is passed into law. No legislation dealing with any application toward individual rights should be passed without due deliberation and input from the people and their Representatives for it cannot be left to legislators alone.

    These Marxist Blue State Governors allow violence in their cities to further their real agenda ….Gun Control

  • Ghost September 18, 2020, 6:53 am

    Worthless Communist Blue State Governor Trolls. They purposely sit back and watch their cities looted & burned, then use that to to push Gun Control. What pieces of Sheet.

  • perlcat September 18, 2020, 4:01 am

    The goalposts have been moved so many times on gun control legislation that I don’t ever see a need or a reason to compromise on any of it, even these laws that merely recriminalize already criminal behavior. That’s the problem with bargaining with people that use bad-faith bargaining as a strategy to get what they want. I’d prefer licensing and criminalizing democrat behavior; society would benefit more.

  • marc hall September 12, 2020, 5:57 pm

    “Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon”. How many times have you heard or read that in a criminal investigation report?
    Shotgun legislation addressing multiple issues simultaneously is ineffectual and, as pointed out by other commentators, often runs afoul of existing laws and individual rights.
    Pick a topic, sink your legislative teeth into it, shred it and reshape it, close the loopholes, help the police protect those they are sworn to protect, them move on to the next issue

  • 0352 September 10, 2020, 8:15 pm

    Mike DeWine should end this nonsense now! No Republican should support this, let alone sponsor such an egregious bill. DeWine is apparently just another RINO who is rapidly becoming a clown in Ohio.

    • Ezra September 18, 2020, 8:49 am

      He has always been a RINO. Voted him out last time. This is why history should be the most talked about subject. Gun violence is a people morality spiritual issue. What criminal or like minded person cares about or follows the law? I don’t Want gun control, what i want is the freedom granted to me by our founders and God to protect me and mine, and yours if you can’t. The right to protect without some government bureaucrat saying i have to be in a safe space, no where to run, back against the wall. Wait, what’s that you say, the best defence is a good offence.

  • herrold September 10, 2020, 12:50 pm

    The bill paves the way for criminalizing )for the Seller) an inadvertent sale to what turns out, down the road, to be a prohibited person. In order to prevent such liability, EVERY third party sale needs to be run through a (non-free) NICS like check, AND one needs to save the ‘Proceed’ order, forever

    This is back-door registration

    This alone makes the bill unacceptable

    • Give Me Freedom September 11, 2020, 5:05 pm

      If in a time of crisis I cannot lend my gun to a neighbor of decent character without committing a crime then the law is criminal. If someone is not a felon or restricted person I should be able to lend, give or sell my property to them without a background check. It’s my property.

  • Paul September 10, 2020, 10:45 am

    Problem here is it puts your right to own a gun in the hands of way to many people/strangers, so it is not your right to chose!

  • Taxx73 September 9, 2020, 11:06 pm

    On the surface this bill actually sounds like a descent piece of legislation. I’d like to read the full bill before saying it’s good. The gun grabbers and libtards will be yelling about demonizing the mentally ill but these are the ones that shouldn’t have guns. That is If a qualified mental health provider and judge agree after proper due process.
    TRUMP 2020!
    Remember If you come for mine you better bring yours!!
    LEAVE OUR RIGHTS ALONE!!!
