In the wake of the tragic shooting in Monterey Park, over the weekend, California Gov. Gavin Newsom told CBS News that tougher gun laws are needed in the state. And that he will keep pushing for them.
Late Saturday night, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran opened fire at a Lunar New Year celebration at Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park. The attack left 11 people dead with several others wounded.
Gov. Newsom has seized this tragedy to once again call for stricter firearm restrictions.
When asked how a pistol, which was illegal in California, was obtained and used in this shooting, Newsom responded, “we will figure it out. That’s going to happen. You got to enforce laws. Things fall through the cracks, but it doesn’t mean you give up.”

Tran is reported to have used a “high-capacity magazine” which could be anything over 10 rounds in California.
The short clip of Newsom’s responses to CBS is composed of indirect, contradictory, and disconnected comments.
Newsom stated, “Nothing about this is surprising. Everything about this is infuriating,” yet the laws California enforces are supposedly meant to make situations such as these a rarity and a surprise.
Further, he describes the Second Amendment as “a suicide pact” while claiming in the same breath that he has “great respect and no ideological opposition against someone who reasonably and responsibly owns a firearm.”
Gov. Newsom did, however, recognize the role of mental health in these tragedies.
“I’m really proud of the work we’ve done in this space, but we’ve had decades of neglect,” he stated. “But respectfully, I will submit that regardless of the challenges it relates to behavioral health, there’s not a country in the world that doesn’t experience behavioral health issues.”
The shooting suspect was found dead in a van Sunday afternoon with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated.

If gruesome(newsom) would make the attorney general enforce the hundreds of gun laws already on the books and not allow criminals to plea bargain out of gun charges, gun use in the state would decrease. I spent 30 years working one of Commifornia’s toughest prisons, and learned how inmates brag about plea bargaining out of gun charges with sentencing enhancements so it didn’t go to trial, laughing at how it is easy to use a gun and get away with it.

If Tran possessed the MAC 11/9 when Roberti-Roos went into effect & he registered it with the CA DOJ it wasn’t a so called “illegal gun”.
It would be no different if I was still a CA resident. I had a CA registered 1999 Colt A2 HBAR Sporter & high cap magazines made before 1995 which were legal when I moved out of state on 12/31/2012. While I have family & property in CA I will not take it or high cap magazines into CA until the AW & high cap mag bans are bounced by the 9th Circus or SCOTUS.
