A CCL holder in Chicago saved a woman’s life last week as she was being attacked by two Rottweilers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The gun owner killed one of the dogs, and the second was euthanized by its owner the next day. The woman survived, but Kane County sheriff Ron Hain said she needed “six feet worth of sutures to repair her body.”

“[The attack] went on for minutes, we don’t have an exact time frame. Once he had the weapon, he shot the dog basically at point-blank range. He had to take appropriate action to save her life …,” Hain said. “And I believe he did.”

The attack began around 9:00 a.m. as a 51-year-old woman jogged down a street in St. Charles, a suburb of Chicago located to the west of the city. A Labradoodle had escaped from an electric fence, but the woman knew the dog’s owner and began leading it by the collar towards its house.

The dog owner also owned two Rottweilers, and when they saw the woman holding the Labradoodle, they ran out of the front door and attacked.

Hain said that one of the dogs had the woman by the leg and the other by her scalp. The dog owner was trying to pull the dogs off the jogger when a man drove by who had a concealed carry license. He didn’t have his firearm with him at the time, but he called his father to bring him his gun as he worked to get the dogs off the woman.

The attack continued for several minutes as they waited for the firearm to arrive. When it did, the CCL holder shot the dog through its side from point-blank range to avoid hitting the woman.

When asked whether the woman was in danger of being shot, Hain pointed out that she was in far more danger from the dogs.

“That’s why he came back to point-blank range and why he fired through the side of the dog. If he had tried to shoot from a distance or into the dog’s head, that would’ve struck the woman, so he was very tactical about the way that he deployed his weapon,” Hain said.

The shot report scared both dogs away, and the one who was shot died soon thereafter. The woman was flown to a trauma center of a nearby hospital, and her injuries are not now considered to be life-threatening.

Hain agreed that the CCL holder acted within the law and called his actions “heroic.” His office is not recommending any charges.

A good take away from the story is to ALWAYS carry your weapon. I’m surprised that the guy was able to call and have someone deliver his weapon in six minutes. Probably a detail best left unscrutinized…
Anyway, great presence of mind to shoot the dog in a way that would not injure the woman.

The newsreader sounded disappointed that the man killed the dog and won’t be facing charges.

Has a concealed carry license and has to call someone to bring him his gun? Why bother then?

Never walk or bike without some protection, even pepper spray or bear mace…

I always have 4 things on me : handgun. Pepper gel. Knife. Combat tourniquet. My dog is old and frail (18) and has been attacked while we are on our walks. Pepper gel settled things everytime so far.

I hope the woman makes a complete recovery. What a horrible thing to happen to anyone. I hope she sees that value of being armed at all times. You never know when an animal will attack, be it the 2 or 4 leg variety. Kudos to the man for stopping to help. There are good people still around.
