Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot is calling on politicians to enact a statewide ban on modern sporting rifles following a drive-by shooting on Halloween night in Garfield Park that left as many as 14 people injured, including three children.
“Last night’s shooting reminds us that there are too many weapons of war available to criminals,” Lightfoot wrote on Twitter. “We must have a statewide ban and I urge the legislature to act.”

Details are still emerging and the investigation is ongoing to determine the motive of the attack.
Authorities are asking the public to come forward with any information.
“We know it’s a drive-by. We know it happens in just a few seconds,” said Police Superintendent David Brown said at a news conference this week.
“It begins and then it’s over, about three seconds the car is pulling out after driving by and shooting randomly, really, into the crowd,” added Brown.
Suppose, for a moment, that mayor Lightfoot got her wish, and the state broadly banned “weapons of war,” does anyone really believe that gangsters and drug dealers in the city would immediately stop doing drive-by shootings?

Of course not! Lightfoot’s call to action is nothing more than window dressing.
The best way to stop drive-bys is to put and keep violent offenders behind bars, something her administration has failed to do consistently, according to Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez.
“Criminals run around knowing that they have the mayor at their side, that Lori Lightfoot is willing to stand up and enable them to be as lawless as they want,” Lopez told Fox News in June.
“Going back for the last two years when she first allowed the righteous protesters to come down and destroy the city of Chicago and in every step since she has tried to deflect and divert attention from her failed policies that have led to Chicago the most American of American cities, a global city, to be run into the ground under her leadership,” Lopez continued.
Crime is up over 35% this year compared to last year, in the Windy City. Yet, despite this shocking stat, mayor Lightfoot is seeking a raise.
In a “management ordinance” put before the City Council on Wednesday, Lightfoot proposed to give whoever holds the position of mayor a raise tied to the rate of inflation or 5 percent, whichever’s less, according to NBCChicago.
Lightfoot currently rakes in $209,915 per year. If the ordinance is approved, she’d make $216,210 starting May 22 of 2023.
Moving forward, there would be a bump in pay every year that would max out at 5 percent. There is an opt-out clause if the acting mayor feels that the raise isn’t warranted.

Take away the “weapons of war” from the schools and streets of Shitcago, and there will just be a huge spike in attacks by “assault knives,” or “assault rocks.” It’s the nature of certain people. They lack the self control needed to be allowed to posses a personal defence weapon. They see it as an invitation to do as they please. The guns aren’t killing people. PEOPLE are killing people. Instead of blaming the tool, blame the fools who can’t seem to use the tool correctly.
Also, why don’t we just make it a crime to shoot people, unless it’s self defense? Oohhh! It already IS a crime? Then why aren’t we doing anything about the PEOPLE misusing the TOOL? Is it because they’re completely unable to follow the rule of law? If not, perhaps they should find somewhere to live where that behavior has been accepted for thousands and thousands of years? It might feel more like home than they realize.

Weapons of war turn American streets and schools into war zones. How many times do we criticise the high crime rates of Chicago, only to criticise the mayor when she tries to do something about it? It is like complaining about inflation and high gas prices only to vote against measures to get them back under control. That is why the blue wave will squelch the red mirage.
And regarding her pay – why should a civil servant be denied cost of living adjustments? Especially when the greed inflation spiral is running roughshod over American families? This is why it took two centuries to pass the 27th Amendmemt.

As ever, you make a salient point, Kane. Terms like weapons of war and msr are more ambiguous than assault weapon, which has a dictionary definition.
Certainly, in its common usage in the media and social media, the phrase weapon of war would not include every implement that had been designed or reworked for warfare; stretching back far enough into human history would include most handheld agricultural implements. A good starting place to define the phrase would be any small arm design based on current frontline military firearms or any such weapon worked or reworked for the simple purpose of complying with civil restrictions for private, personal ownership.
I certainly welcome any good faith collaboration to refine this definition. In its common use, the phrase definitely includes AR and AK pattern firearms and any practical definition would have to include those.

it is always the same. Take guns away from good people. Leave good people helpless. And they think bad people won’t hurt good people. They’ve never read a history book. History will repeat itself every time. Bad people will always kill good people they’re helpless. The day the good people are strong bad people run away and find good people that are weak. Mayor Lori Lightfoot should be held accountable for every one of these people shot . she should be put in prison for what she has done.
Weapons of War? Since early mankind everything has been used in warfare. Be it spears, bow & arrows, clubs to slingshots. Every firearm also has been used, rifles, shotguns, pistols even blowguns. So what does Mayor Lightfoot want to eliminate beside the police force? Maybe she should step down and be replaced with someone with at least half a brain.
