DRD Tactical got its start in 2010 developing a 7.62mm rifle that fit in a briefcase. That project for the Joint and Special Operations Program produced two patents: a quick barrel change and internal recoil systems.

DRD has brought those two innovations to their newest offering, the MFP-21, and we got a chance to see it for ourselves at SHOT Show 2022.

The MFP-21 is designed for concealment. The overall length of the pistol is 18 inches, but it gets better. The internal recoil system allowed DRD engineers to include an integrated Picatinny rail on the rear of the pistol, which can accept a wide variety of aftermarket folding stocks and braces.

For an even smaller package, the MFP-21 can be broken down further by removing the barrel using DRD’s quick-change barrel system. Users remove the handguard with the QD lever, unscrew the barrel nut, and remove the barrel for maximum portability.

DRD reps explained that the rifle can be relied upon to make several accurate shots with a hand-tightened barrel nut. But unlike AR-platform rifles, the gun doesn’t need to be set in a vice and tightened to 30-80 ft.-lbs. of torque. Instead, users simply tighten the nut with the supplied wrench while holding the pistol, and they’re good to go.

In its totally broken-down state, the pistol measures only as long as the receiver, which would be ideal for a suitcase or backpack.

The MFP-21 comes with a hefty $2,500 price tag, but it also offers some great features. The two-stage match trigger breaks at only 4.5 pounds, the controls are all ambidextrous (except for the charging handle), and the handguard has a 1913 rail and is M-LOK compatible. The barrel measures eight inches long and has a 1:8 twist. The five-position gas block can also be adjusted by hand thanks to the easily removable handguard.

The MFP-21 is available in 5.56 NATO and .300 Blackout, and comes with a backpack for carrying and storage.

The MFP-21 comes with a spendy price tag but also several innovative and useful capabilities.

We also got a first look at another DRD rifle, the Sub-6. This rifle is not yet for sale, but it features the same internal recoil system as the MFP-21. It also, as its name suggests, weighs less than six pounds. We can’t share any additional details at this time, but we can give you these images from SHOT Show 2022.

Must have missed it in the story where all of the specs are detailed and what the receiver is made of.
