First Look – SilencerCo’s NEW Do-It-All Hybrid 46M Suppressor

I’ve been collecting SilencerCo suppressors for many years now (buying them with my own money). My very first one was an Osprey 45 followed by an Omega 300 (my favorite suppressor) and my most recent SilencerCo was a Hybrid 46. None of them have been safe queens. They all have thousands of rounds through them and all of them are still relevant suppressors today. The appeal of the Hybrid 46 was that it would work on any caliber from 223, 338 Lapua up to 45-70. It would also work on pistols up to 45 caliber. 

At midnight last night, SilencerCo announced a new Suppressor, the Hybrid 46M. I actually had the opportunity to spend most of the day Saturday at SilencerCo with the new 46M. While there I got to use the sound meter in SilencerCo’s lab as well as test the 46M with multiple calibers and platforms on the range. 

SilencerCo is located just outside of Salt Lake City, UT. They employ over 200 Americans and are likely the biggest manufacturer of suppressors in the entire industry. They use state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques including CNC and wire EDM. Their suppressors are 100% made in the USA and 100% made in their facility. They even do their own coatings and anodizing in-house. Apparently, they make efforts to source U.S.-made metals and materials.

The Hybrid 46M is better than the original Hybrid 46 in that it’s lighter, it’s modular, meaning you can reduce the weight and length depending on your purpose, and it’s substantially quieter. 

The Hybrid 46M is made from Titanium, Inconel, and 17-4 Stainless. 

The 46M will work on any caliber except .22 rimfire all the way up to and including 45-70, 338 Lapua and up to 460 Weatherby Magnum. For those that don’t understand why you can’t shoot .22 LR, you generally never want to use anything that isn’t a dedicated rimfire suppressor for .22 LR as the lead is extremely soft and dirty and eventually will fill your suppressor with lead. Most dedicated .22 suppressors can be completely taken apart and cleaned.

The 46M is full auto and subgun rated. 

It also works as a pistol suppressor up to 45 caliber.

It’s important to note that the weight changes depending on the length you select and the attachment method. For example, direct thread is going to be the lightest overall configuration.

To use it as a pistol suppressor you must add the pistol piston device or it won’t function.  The length ranges from 5.78 inches to 9 inches depending on how you configure it and what mount you attach. The width is 1.57 inches.

I didn’t weigh the Hybrid 46M in every configuration but SilencerCo claims that it weighs 12.2 ounces in its shortest configuration (5.78 inches) but that’s also without a mount, which is never how you’ll run it.

The original Hybrid 46 is an excellent suppressor but wasn’t technically hearing safe (OSHA’s hearing safe level is 140 dB) with larger calibers like 338 Lapua as they metered at something like 146 dB.

The NEW Hybrid 46M comes in at 140 dB with 338 Lapua. With sound, every 3 dB’s doubles the volume of the sound so the new Hybrid 46M is more than twice as quiet as the original Hybrid 46 with 338 Lapua. Other calibers also have similar reductions. 

I shot the 46M on a .338 Lapua with no hearing protection and felt no pain or discomfort.

As you would expect the Hybrid 46M will direct thread mount (separate purchase), can be used with SilencerCo’s excellent quick detach ASR mount system (ships with this), a pistol piston mount (separate purchase), or a 3 lug mount (separate purchase). 

In all the shooting with different configurations and on different platforms, I experienced NO malfunctions with the 46M.
