But in this 2021 picture you can pretty clearly make out a Zev comp and a little of what could be a mag funnel. Also you can get a pretty clear shot of the optic and rear sight assembly. (Photo: DOD/Lisa Ferdinando)

General Scott Miller is a shooter. Seen before with a modernized, practical-tactical 1911, it appears the high-ranking officer has switched to a late model Glock with some sweet upgrades.

“Miller’s sidearms have made news in the past, not just for their uniqueness, but because the General actually drew his 1911 during a brazen insider attack in Kandahar in 2018 that killed controversial Afghan National Police Lieutenant General Abdul Raziq and wounded two Americans,” writes The Drive’s Tyler Rogoway. “Miller was not among the casualties.”

Rumor has it that it’s a Gen 5 Glock 19 set up for use with an optic. He has been photographed with the pistol in a number of different configurations but all of them seem to include a red dot sight, probably a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro with a CQ adjustable rear backup sight installed.

It has an extended, threaded barrel, seen with either a thread protector or a Zev Technologies Pro Compensator V2 installed, and a chunky extended magazine baseplate. It looks like he’s also added a mag funnel in some of the photos.

And who knows what’s going on inside that handgun. Does it have a flashy flat-faced race trigger? Does the General approve of enhanced disconnectors, and if so, whose? Ghost? Lantac? Maybe someday we’ll know.

While much of the U.S. military is using the SIG Sauer P320 in its M17 and M18 configurations, special units that have adopted Glock pistols have chosen to continue to field them. It seems like Miller is keeping it both modern and old-school with his latest choice of handgun.

For 1911 aficionados, don’t worry, he still has his 1911, and does carry it depending on the situation.

“General Miller carries the weapon which makes the most sense from a METT-T (Mission, Enemy, Terrain, Troops and Time) perspective,” Army Col. William “Sonny” Leggett told Task and Purpose. “General Miller, in Farah Province in 2019, was armed with a M1911.”

If you were a General kicking dirt, what would you want to keep strapped? Let us know in the comments.

I’m somewhat under-impressed with this piece. No docs, no specifics, just observations and an admission that he seems to have two different firearms that he carries. Nice, but hey, a bit more information and a bit less “Oh lookatthat!” would be appreciated.
And the only “Optical” for a pistol is a laser unless you’re talking slow-fire target roscoes.

Okay. I think the 19X is it, would have gone nicer with his belt and outfit?

All things being equal which would you rather face a 9M or 45APC? I thought so.

Carry What you like. what you’re comfortable with. I like my 1911 COLT 45

  • Thomas April 9, 2021, 8:34 pm

I would carry two different guns depending on the situation ,H& K mark 23 if i had backup ,or Glock 17L if I was by my self in a hostile area with a couple extra 33 round mags.

Speaking as a retired Navy Seabee, officers better be carrying whatever the troops are carrying.
Nothing is more of a morale problem than an officer with a “Do as I say not as I do” attitude.
I carried a M1911 for most of my career and when they transitioned to the Beretta M9 I hated it, would have kept carrying the 1911 but of course it wasn’t an optional thing.

Interesting in my day General Officers were issued a specifically tricked out version of the standard issue weapon. Though Some of the older flag officers I knew in the day had .32 ACP semi-autos and even .38 Spec. revolvers but most had a hand built version of the 1911 similar to the Army’s National Match pistols.

I like my M17. You can shoot 9mm then if you want to shoot tanks you can switch to .45’s in less than a minute.

I’d carry what I demand the troops carry. This is not WWII and he is not George Patton. Carry what you demand that your troops carry. This is, by far, the worst Command structure in the history of our armed forces with Lloyd Austin in charge … the CPP is laughing at us.

Generals get to carry what they want. I’ll bet its loaded with something better that standard ball ammo too.

Good for you, and I’m glad your not general since clearly you just complain and didn’t go his route where you could of carried an OVER HUNDRED YEAR OLD technology into the field! What does the 1911 gold like 7 or 9 rounds?! And is bet he’s carrying a G17 that with the extra at least three rounds he is carrying TWENTY! Who’s the idiot, the guy who carries over HUNDRED YEAR OLD technology into a place that his LIFE is in the line or the guy who carries TODAY’S technology with WAAAAY LESS parts to fail and maintain AND can shoot TWENTY PLUS ONE ROUNDS in a SINGLE MAG?! There’s a reason GLOCKS ARE the NUMBER ONE SOLD gun in the US and most likely the WORLD! I myself like having THREE BUILT IN safeties that TRULY WORK and NONE have to flipped off like a HUNDRED PLUS year old 1911 with its SUPER SLOW NEVER super sonic rounds and instead is intuitive with a NORMAL trigger pull while still being WAY SAFER than ANY so called flip safety! And who wants to carry SUCH a heavy all metal gun when it’s been proven over and over that metal framed guns SIMPLY ARE NOT NEEDED?! Only old farts carry 1911’s which you must be! 1911’s… Hilarious!

        Hey Slim,
Experienced gun guys carry whatever the 4ell we want. The ancient 1911 is more popular today than anytime since John Browning applied for his patent in 111 years ago, and for good reason. Its tough, easy to use, accurate, safe, and delivers .45 ACP with devastating results. If you want a gun that delivers almost 40% more energy per shot than a plastic 9mm, then carry a .45. Heck, carry whatever you want for the mission at hand, but the 1911 thrives whilst Glocks are being abandoned by LEAs nationwide. Cheers and happy shooting.

I’m a .45 ACP advocate as well. I carried a 1911 for 3 decades, just moved to an offshoot model (double action) a few years ago. I would cite similar reasons for sticking with these weapons. I realize there have been improvements in the 9mm round. I understand the advantage of having more bullets. I just have more confidence in the handgun tested in so many wars. I would advise folks to carry the firearm that they are most comfortable with.

I’m actually a retired former paratrooper and contractor and an avid competitive shooter, instructor and reloader whose everyday carry piece depends solely upon the weather, what I am wearing, where I am going and … instinct. I know and associate with more former retired field grade and flag officers than you have millimeters in your tiny little microscopic johnson … which is evidenced by your penile centric big-belt-buckle compensating response … slick. Oh, I got my nickname while serving with the 509th Airborne Combat Team in Italy (where I was also on the pistol team that tested the 92F before adopting the FS to replace the 1911), when you were probably stilling crapping your insecure diapers if not simply still treading fluid in your daddy’s bollacks having not yet been dumped into your mommy’s patooty. Learn your place boy … respect your elders. “Slim” is obviously a rhetorical representation you chose to reflect your limited skill, knowledge and understanding of basic military protocol, common sense and standards when it comes to what troops expect from their leaders.

Your liberal use of insults takes away much of what you are trying to convey.

          • triggerpull April 13, 2021, 8:57 am

A good laugh though. : ) For some reason gunfights always come down to penis size. The fact I carry a 22 single shot derringer is purely coincidental. ; )

In the early 1980’s, I carried a Springfield 1911A1 as a Mortarman in the 509th ABCT in Italy. Geronimo, AATW, Brother!

  • MDA April 9, 2021, 12:28 pm

That really instills confidence in the troops who cannot get their hands on a tricked out Glock. Doesn’t surprise me though. I remember seeing a GO in Afghanistan sporting a 1911 on his hip with pearl grips.
