Hawaii Lawmakers May Limit Magazine Capacity to 5 Rounds

An alert went out earlier this month from the Hawaii Firearms Coalition (HFC) concerning talk amongst legislators and law enforcement to limit magazine capacity to five rounds.

“Late last month, we heard from Honolulu Police Department Chief Susan Ballard that she was going to ask for a reduced magazine capacity law, and we found out today that the person she has asked to sponsor the bill is Representative Gregg Takayama,” said HFC on Facebook Friday.

“Whilst it was unclear what the actual number will be, Representative Gregg Takayama gave the impression that the starting point would be five rounds,” the alert continued. “This would not only significantly reduce the number of rounds in rifles, but would also reduce the number of rounds allowed in pistols by 50%.”

Under state law, all detachable feeding devices with a capacity over 10 rounds are outlawed unless they’ve been modified to comply with the current 10-round limit.

HFC is urging gun owners in the Aloha State to contact Rep. Takayama and ask that he pull his support:

Rep. Gregg Takayama can be reached at his office: 808-586-6340.  He can be e-mailed: [email protected]. OR you can use our webform at www.hifico.org/mag

HFC also addressed some of the myths regarding standard capacity magazines.

“The common misconception is that reducing the number of rounds allowed in magazines will reduce the number of deaths in mass shootings, but as we have seen in many of the mass shootings in states like California, who already ban them, bad guys ignore the law and obtain them illegally anyway,” said HFC.

“Magazine bans only serve to benefit criminals,” they continued. “No one wants to reload when they are fighting for their lives. With home invasions becoming more common, and with multiple attackers becoming the norm, every bullet available counts.”

Courts around the country have debated the constitutionality of magazine limits.  Unfortunately, until SCOTUS takes up a case on the matter, we are left with a patchwork of rulings that uphold the arbitrary limits in some states and declare them unconstitutional in others.

Where does it end? Pretty soon we’ll all be like Barney Fife – only allowed one bullet, which you’ll be required to store in your shirt pocket. Then you’ll have to fumble to find your bullet and load it when there’s an emergency. Lord help you if you are dealing with more than one thug.
Why do they call them Constitutional “rights” if they can be eroded, compromised and constantly chipped away? As Justice Scalia pointed out, your rights were not given to you by the government, they are from God, they blong to you and future generations, and they are not negotiable. Once the government or an anime takes away our right to bear arms, how do we protect ourselves against the taking of our right to free speech, press, assembly, religion, privacy in our homes, protection from unreasonable search and seizure without a warrant, on and on…? The Founding Fathers knew that governments can become oppressive and overbearing. They knew history and lived in a world where there were Kings, dictators, emperors and tyrants who were willing to enslave their own people and conquer neighboring countries. The Bill of Rights was included in the Constitution to put chains on the government and prevent it from becoming tyrannical. The right to bear arms wasn’t included so that citizens could shoot paper targets at a range. They knew there would be criminals among us and forces from foreign lands, and they wanted us to have the means to preserve our values and way of life. Every past generation of Americans has been vigilant to preserving our rights so that future generations may enjoy freedom. The time has arrived for this generation to either shrink from responsibility, or to show that we are worthy of enjoying our freedoms by resisting the forces that would take them from us.

I have 6,7, and 9 round revolvers. How do they deal with those?

  • Donn January 18, 2020, 12:52 pm

Sure you can stock up on 5 or 10+ mags, but they are trying to make possession of them a crime.

Everyone wants to end senseless gun violence, even if it’s not possible. It’s an endless debate which has nothing to do with mag capacity, it deals with mental capacity… and very troubled misfits.

This type of action makes law abiding citizens into criminals, nothing more.

Let’s sell Hawaii to Red China for the price of the national debt.

  • Kole January 17, 2020, 10:01 pm

Between this and all verginia shit. This is getting to be mother fucking rediculess. These Dem ass holes all need to be locked in a cage. America how much more are we gonna let these pieces of shit take from us. We seem to be losing! It’s getting close to the point where if we don’t stop these criminal politicians we are going to be completely disarmed. Getting close to the point of having to fight!

  • Zupglick January 17, 2020, 3:31 pm

Are they limiting Law Enforcement magazines? How about National Guard?
If not then criminals will still be able to get “High” capacity magazines.

  • OhMyGosch January 17, 2020, 2:39 pm

New York State tried a 7 round limit and lost in Federal Court.

  • Bad Penguin January 17, 2020, 2:11 pm

But what about revolvers? They hold 6 rounds and they are semi automatics too.

    • FirstStateMark January 19, 2020, 2:15 pm

Geez! Don’t give these assholes any ideas. Soon they will be plugging up one chamber in the cylinder.

  • Norm January 17, 2020, 10:59 am

At first read this sounds good but in truth it makes no sense. If the law is enacted they will announce when it is to become law. Prior to that date people will stock up on them or simply buy from someone willing to turn a blind eye. The effect is that it will have no effect.

    • Robert January 17, 2020, 11:56 am

How does this “ sound good”? Only ignorant people think limits on capacity make us safer… there are videos done by law enforcement that show how ineffective it is… it also proves that the anti gunners will never stop.. first it was 10 rounds, then 7 (in NY), now 5,, they won’t stop until it’s a single shot muzzle loader or outright ban as many politicians have openly called for.. the only thing that sounds “good” is shall not be infringed, just as the 2nd Amendment states

    • Scotty Gunn January 17, 2020, 1:36 pm

It doesn’t sound good from the very first word. Any attempt at taking away rights is bad.

  • Alan1018 January 17, 2020, 8:21 am

The courts have already struck NY’s 7 round mag ban, I guess the commies in Hawaii haven’t been paying attention.

  • Mark D. January 17, 2020, 7:28 am

Although this may sound cruel, but all we can do is hope & pray that family members of this a-hole are raped & brutalized during a home invasion and run out of rounds to stop the attack. I’m SICK & TIRED of all these new “gun laws” that ONLY affect the law abiding citizens….!!…..The criminal will still be obtaining 30 rd plus high cap mags…!!…wake the fk up..!!!

I was stationed w Army in HI. Nice place when I was 20 running around single and wild.
Fast forward to Barry O’s run. Now I study the bureaucracy of local government in Hawaii. That place is as corrupt as the day is long. I knew there were ALOT of illegals from pacific rim there in 1980. What is it like today? That place is as black market as any place on earth! With all the fed gov presence, it is Casablanca of the Pacific.

We already know that the DOJ, the great protectors of the Constitution, will do nothing. Thanks in advance, Mr. Barr.

The saving will be up to the Supremes. Vote Trump and Republican to ensure the next two appointments are conservative. In the meantime, buy more ammo

    • deanbob January 17, 2020, 6:45 am

They (DOJ and FBI) already selectively enforce existing law. Can you imagine how the law will be enforce when they have all the guns? We will be a nation of serfs).

Where is Trump in getting the DOJ, State Dept, FBI, to be transparent and not fight organizations like Judicial Watch(JW) ? JW goes to court and battles legions of lawyers who have taken the same position as they did under Obama, Bush and Clinton. If Trump is in charge, where is he to get his AG, his Secretary of State (or any other agency) to be more forthcoming in Freedom of Information lawsuits prying email, documents, texts, etc that the American people have a right to see? I think Trump is the best president of my 70 years; but where is he on these issues? I have emailed him multiple times and asked him to get his managers off their arses and work for “We The People” instead of the DEEP STATE. More emails/letters might help.

    • Dr Motown January 17, 2020, 9:28 am

How is this a DOJ issue? SCOTUS needs to get some cajones and begin taking up some more of these 2A challenge lawsuits. Until that happens, the states feel emboldened to trample on federal rights
