A homeowner in Pasco County, Florida, fought off three armed intruders over the weekend, killing two and wounding a third.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco praised the homeowner for exercising his Second Amendment right to defend himself and his home.

“The victim in this case exercised in Second Amendment right to protect himself in his home,” Nocco told reporters. “The Second Amendment allows you to protect yourself by carrying and bearing arms. That’s what our citizens of Pasco County will do. I’ve seen it happen before, and unfortunately, I think it may have to happen in our future.”

The incident took place around 12:43am early Friday morning. The teenage homeowner was by himself playing video games when he heard glass breaking in his laundry room, according to the affidavit. He retrieved a Glock 9mm handgun and went to investigate.

He saw someone unlock the door from the inside by reaching through the broken glass. Once inside, he noticed that the intruder was wearing a black mask and pointing a gun at him.

He fired at the first suspect, who fell to the ground. A second suspect came behind the first, and he was also pointing a gun at the homeowner. The victim fired again, and the second suspect fell to the ground.

Finally, a third suspect entered the home, and the homeowner shot him as well.

The sheriff did not say how many rounds were fired by any party, but he did mention that at least one of the intruders fired at least once.

After firing at the third suspect, the victim’s Glock jammed, so he went to retrieve a Kriss Vector 10mm carbine. The suspect had fled when he returned, but his neighbor found him and held him at gunpoint until sheriff’s deputies arrived.

The first two suspects died at the scene. They have been identified as Luis Casado, 21, and Khyle Durham, 21. The third suspect, Jeremiah Tramel, 19, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is being charged with two counts of second-degree homicide and one count of home invasion robbery.

“He is accountable for the deaths because it was during the commission of a felony that he was involved in that those two people died,” Sheriff Nocco said.

All three men had lengthy rap sheets. Casado has faced charges such as attempting to flee and eluding an officer, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and resisting an officer without violence, according to Pasco County records. Durham has faced numerous charges of auto and home burglary, including a 2018 conviction of firearm theft.

The homeowner believes the men targeted his home because he is a firearm enthusiast who frequently posts images of himself holding firearms, according to Nocco. The sheriff told reporters the victim and suspects may have been known to each other.

“We believe there was a relationship, there was some type of known entity between the victim and the suspects. So, this is not a totally random situation. This is an isolated, targeted situation,” Nocco said.

The incident is still under investigation and is being reviewed by the state attorney’s office. Nocco acknowledged the tragedy of any loss of life but credits the Second Amendment with saving the homeowner’s life.

“It’s a sad situation when there’s a loss of life. There’s no doubt about it. But for that victim who’s sitting inside their house and hears glass break, they don’t have many other options,” Nocco told reporters. “I can’t imagine someone who has children, a parent, who has to protect themselves. It’s a sad reality of the world we live in today, but we’re fortunate that you have the right to protect yourself in your home.”

I wish more self defense shooting articles mentioned the firearms used.

Surprised the Glock 19 jammed… maybe limp wristted it in the excitement.

And again… never post pics of your firearms… like posting gold bars to some.

  • Ken January 28, 2022, 11:29 am

Lesson learned: Don’t post pics of yourself and your firearms on social media.

They didn’t think about the fatal funnel, but the home owner sure did. We need more armed citizens…

  • Trevor_Phillips July 17, 2020, 7:10 pm

Just like a Glock to jam. Could’ve gotten Tramel too if he hadn’t been using a ladies gun. Dumb kid shouldn’t been posting pictures of his guns.

  • Ronnie D. Stidham July 17, 2020, 5:13 pm

I don’t know who is the biggest Dumb Ass. Showing off his weapons, or #2, or 3. But you can fix stupid!

  • jrcowboy July 17, 2020, 12:33 pm

The homeowner needs to go back to the shooting range for more practice. All three intruders should have been killed.

  • Bobby July 17, 2020, 9:48 am

Yes Glocks can and do jam. There is plenty of info out there on it. I am also wondering why the other two stooges kept coming in the house after their buddy was shot dead. Then again felons are not smart people in the first place.

Actually, the 2nd amendment does not guarantee, nor does it protect anything.
The “victim” exercised the age old right of self-defense that is not to be questioned by anyone or any so-called agency in America.
In addition, in this nation, while sovereign powers are delegated to agencies of government, sovereignty remains with the people. So, the “victim” exercised the additional recognized, age old right of a sovereign to defend its sovereignty from harm.
However, since we’ve allowed agencies of government to morph this constitutional republic into a democracy, wherein those agencies have usurped and decimated the rights of the people, self-defense has become a target of those we elect to “secure” our rights.
The true purpose of the 2nd was to warn public officials that they must adhere to the original Constitution, in which “the Militia of the several States” was to be organized, armed, and disciplined by the people themselves. One of the defined duties of Militia is to “suppress Insurrections”. When agents, or agencies of government infringe on the rights of the people, that is the definition of insurrection in our nation.

      Well said.

    • Mark R July 17, 2020, 10:55 am

To your point about governmental infringement on sovereignty, a recent example is the couple in Michigan defending their life and home from rioters…sorry protesters. Their firearms were confiscated and may very likely face charges for “brandishing” weapons. What bullsh••!

    • Liberal Hater July 17, 2020, 12:16 pm

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WITH THESE LIBRTARD IDOITS .. PROTECT YOUR FAMILY !! PROTECT YOURSELF !! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !! DEMOCRATS ARE DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY !! VOTE THEM ALL OUT !!! vote Red !!

      • Gary L Coots July 17, 2020, 3:18 pm

        Said like a true American

  • John July 17, 2020, 8:53 am

This is how all the rioter should be handle.

  • Link Lackluster July 17, 2020, 8:51 am

Oh well. Two career criminals getting cut down in the early parts of what would be long, increasingly violent careers. Saved people a lot of tax money both in hospital costs, trial costs, incarceration costs, etc. The most it will cost the citizens of Florida is for a pauper’s funeral for each because we know their loser families won’t be footing the bill for putting their loser carcasses in the cold earth. Maybe the third will succumb to post-surgery infection, or something, so the taxpayers won’t have to incarcerate his loser life for an extended period of time.

  • Willie-O July 17, 2020, 8:47 am

Included in this article is exactly why I don’t “twit, tweet, face, book, insta or gram” (ridiculous monikers intended) : the perpetrators likely knew or knew of their intended victim AND his firearms because he posted pictures of himself and/or his firearms on various social media. People are so into posting every facet of their personal lives on social media that nothing is personal anymore. Sure, you CAN, but it doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Had he been asleep and not heard the glass breaking, this could’ve turned out much worse for him.

    • Kane July 17, 2020, 11:10 am

So many people are also ruined by social media when their history is reviewed.

  • Dave Lemay July 17, 2020, 8:47 am

I agree with others that there is something off with this entire incident. What bothers me more however, is where the author states, “The incident took place around 12:43pm early Friday morning.” Since that is a contradictory statement, I gather the author doesn’t know AM from PM? If you’re going to write articles like this one, mistakes of this sort tell readers, that you aren’t knowledgeable, or that you don’t care about the facts. Please get yourself a proof reader.

    • Dennis July 17, 2020, 10:24 am

I just read the article. The author DOES indeed say 12:43 AM and not PM.

  • nuthinmuffin July 17, 2020, 8:17 am

wiped the smile off of criminal Khyle’s face…forever

  • Mitranoc July 17, 2020, 8:14 am

Why would the second and third thug continue to enter the house after hearing the gunshots fired? Especially after watching the first criminal drop like a sack of potatoes. Too many things in this story seem odd.

  • James July 17, 2020, 7:46 am

Don’t show off your firearms on social media.

  • Daninfla July 17, 2020, 7:38 am

If he was a “teen”. Someone less than 20 years old then how did he purchase a gun in Florida. You have to be 21 or older.

Secondly- a glock Jam? I have never heard those two words in a sentence, ever?
Thirdly – who uses a kiss vector as a back up gun.

  • Bob July 17, 2020, 7:12 am

teenaged homeowner? Under 21 owning a handgun? Glock malfunctioning?? There’s some crazy stuff going on here…

    • Trevor_Phillips July 17, 2020, 7:03 pm

Don’t have to be 21 to be given a gun

  • SD DENTON July 17, 2020, 5:43 am

When seconds count, the police are just minutes away. Good job. If these criminals were in prison for their previous crimes as they should have been, maybe they’d be alive today. Keep letting them out and slapping them on the wrist. This guy saved the taxpayers a lot of money.

    • Edward T Curtis July 17, 2020, 11:47 pm

SD – You are absolutely right. The illustrious Governor Newsom of California wants to release 8,000 felons from San Quentin because of the COVID 19 infecting a number of inmates and the state is $50,000,000,000 in debt. Gee, maybe Cal. wouldn’t be in debt if the state’s government would work to keep people who are in the state illegally out. I used to live in the Golden state when it was golden! The politicians have tarnished it so much, it is unrecognizable. Just a fun fact – at last count California spends approximately $81,000.00 per year on each prisoner in the system. It is unreasonable that hard working citizens who don’t even earn $81,000/yr pay high taxes to keep people incarcerated. Be cheaper to live at the Hilton.

  • Grim July 17, 2020, 4:52 am

Wonder how and why the Glock jammed. That is concerning.

    • Larry C July 17, 2020, 8:26 am

Most likely it was a defect with the ammo causing the gun not to completely cycle. I have seen that happen with off-shore ammo.

      • JohnL July 17, 2020, 10:36 am

Never owned a Glock, but many years of semi-auto use tells me it’s either ammo, lack of cleaning and lubrication, or all of the above.

Most, if not all of my SA pistols have certain brands of ammo that they simply will not run.

      • Serg B July 17, 2020, 11:50 am

Ordered 500 of FedArm reloaded ammo – it jam if not everyone , then every second one. Loaded off-shore Tula and it worked like well oiled Zinger. For practise and target shooting those are good. But at home for personal protection need to load reliable ammo – so many to list. Stay safe.

    • Trevor_Phillips July 17, 2020, 7:02 pm

      Because it’s a Glock

  • Rsbks6 July 17, 2020, 3:48 am

I am happy with our sheriff’s comments. I’m happy I voted for him

    • Dano July 17, 2020, 9:56 am

Any semi-auto can jam. While instructing others during firearms safety class I’ve experienced a Glock jam due to a limp wrist of the shooter. If the wrist is not held firm during recoil of the slide the extraction of the empty shell can cause a jam. If the casing gets caught like a stove pipe in the action it has to be cleared to continue. In a tense situation as this it is highly possible he tried to fire the Glock before he stiffened his wrist as he may have been in a hurry to fire another round. Glocks are not infallible, they are mechanical. Just having firearms does not make you safe. Extensive training helps.

  • Paul July 16, 2020, 10:15 am

Okay where is the rest of this story…..or someone needs to explain this to me. A teen home owner with a glock 9mm handgun, key word is teen….under 20 yrs old……..wtf?????

    • BUURGA July 17, 2020, 2:51 am

There is no age limit for home defense. Nice try at deflection.

      • Peter Brown July 17, 2020, 1:18 pm

The guy needing explanations and ‘closure’ might be happier were the story line of a defenseless teenager found raped, mutilated, and murdered.

    • Dr. Strangelove July 17, 2020, 5:41 am

Yeah, AFAIK 21 is the legal age to own a pistol.

    • Rick B July 17, 2020, 6:42 am

      Agreed

    • Rob July 17, 2020, 6:55 am

The victim was likely 18 or 19; which would be legal to own a firearm.

    • Tim July 17, 2020, 7:22 am

Federal law allows a person 18 or over to possess a handgun. They just can not purchase one. A gift would be legal. I do not know what Florida Laws are.

    • Cea July 17, 2020, 9:36 am

I didn’t hear where they said the teen was the only resident. Did I miss that?
If he wasn’t the only resident, is it possible that someone else that lived there (mom, dad?) actually owned the handgun(s)? I know that if I owned handguns, my kids could use them to defend our home.
