House Passes Amendment To Sell Army Surplus 1911s To Public

Authors Brent McCluskey Industry News This Week

An amendment to the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act may soon empower the Civilian Marksmanship Program to publicly sell the Army’s massive 1911 stockpile.

Rep. Mike Rogers’ (R-Alabama) amendment was passed by the House Armed Service Committee, meaning the World War II-era handguns could potentially be handed off to the CMP to be parceled out to anyone willing to pay for a piece of history.

“As a gun owner and strong believer in the Second Amendment, my proposal is a commonsense approach to eliminating an unnecessary cost to the Federal government while allowing the very capable CMP to handle the sale of these vintage firearms that otherwise would just sit in storage,” said Rogers.

The CMP’s firearms reserve is dwindling, but it gets an injection of roughly 100,000 highly-collectable military surplus handguns, the organization can continue promoting firearms safety training and rifle practice for years to come.

“Not only is this an organization that is committed to training civilians in the proper, responsible, and safe use of firearms, but at a cost of roughly $2.00 per pistol per year to store these weapons, we were spending $200,00 a year in perpetuity,” said Rep. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma, who voted for the successful amendment. “This sensible change will save the taxpayers millions over the years to come, as well as aid a great organization that serves the public.”

The NDA Act will likely come to the House floor this May.

I remember back in the late 50\’s and early 60\’s you could walk into an Army Navy surplus store and pick a 45 cal pistol out of crates they had , they were packed in a waxed paper and coated with cosmolene , they also had M-1 carbines, as wells as M14\’s . Of course that was back when the people were safe walking the streets and in their homes ! Before the politicians decided to trample all over our rights as Americans by restricting any thing we used for home defense. I do know you never heard of home invasions, robberies, like we have today ! Back then cops were happy writing tickets, and that sort of thing . If the Constitution was observed as it was written , I don\’t think we would have any of the trouble we have today ! Anyone out to do wrong back then had to keep in mind that most people around them were armed and trying to rob, rape, or do anything else to another citizen would bring about dire consequences ! I think we can thank our elected officials for a lot of the troubles we have had since they passed these laws , I guess they wanted to try to make people think they were actually doing something , certainly not helping the civilians !

Good luck purchasing one of these guns..I tried to purchase an M1 from CMP and the cost was way over the going rate..these will be too I’m sure..You’d be better off purchasing a 1911 type pistol somewhere else..There are plenty of pistols out there and some will be a lot cheaper than these I’m sure..

Various assignments carried a 1911. Trained by Marines in Quantico, later did some prisoner chasing at Norman Oklahoma, qualified again at Corpus Christie, Texas. Powerful weapon. Would have liked to have carried one as a police officer. We had Colt 6 shooters, 38 cal.Police Specials.
I’d like to have one now for inside my house.

What a wonderful opportunity! My wife and I would each like to be included for purchasing the used 1911’s. We are retired living on Social Security so we generally can not afford a Colt 1911 or any of the like manufactured 1911’s. Please allow us to each purchase a 1911 from storage when they become available.

    • Rich & Shelby Hewitt September 5, 2015, 3:36 pm

What a wonderful opportunity! Please place our names on the documentation to purchase used 1911’s when they are authorized to come out of storage. If it is possible we would each like to be considered for one. We live on Social Security so generally we can not afford any of the 1911s available to the public. Hopefully the used 1911s will be offered at an affordable price.

Some of you are pretty funny like others has said you need to be a member of CMP to get one,.. And then you will most likely pay pretty close to top dollar for it..Especially if it is a rare one. Nothing comes out of CMP cheap anymore and has not for sometime,.,This is all if the bill passes and pres signs .. A bunch M1 carbines a few years back was at the same fate ..We never seen one of them.. It is all a big if and tbh by the time you pay for cmp membership and firearm .You might as well bought something new..

  • Bill Hurst August 25, 2015, 3:01 pm

So, if you multiply 100,000 guns times $2.00 you end up with $200,000 or like the author says and end up with $200,00??? So do you believe there are 100,000 1911’s out there that the American public will have a chance to purchase for a decent price or are there $200,00 worth of them? Or are there any at all? (Shouldn’t the thousands separator (comma) be in a different spot? Or did the American public suddenly start reading from left to right and forget to tell me?) Depending on which of these numbers you decide to believe makes a little bit of difference, With six zero’s in the number that means there are someplace around 100,000 1911’s or if you choose to believe thee are five zero’s in the number there should be someplace around 10,000 handguns being discussed here. In my opinion (which doesn’t amount to squat) with a mistake, misprint, discrepancy, or foul-up like this, the accuracy and credibility of the entire article are out the window. But this is just my opinion and everyone has an opinion. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and some stink more than others.

  • jim raymond August 25, 2015, 11:40 am

I would love to have one made by Colt. I caried one in Korea, made by Colt, and I had great faith in its reliability and accuracy! Please let me know where and when to order one.

  • Ken August 25, 2015, 11:32 am

I have always wanted a 1911. My father served in the US Army during WWII in the European theater. To be able to own a 1911 that was intended for our service men use would be to own a small item of American pride and nostalgia.

Please let me know when they become available. I would be very interested in having one.

Thank you for bringing this bit of news to our attention.

  • ROCK August 25, 2015, 11:23 am

Please put me on the list and notify me when these come available. I have several 1911’s but there’s always room in the safe for more.

  • BrianNH August 25, 2015, 11:17 am

What amazes me is the number of people who posted on this forum that they would like someone to notify them when the guns become available, if they do become available. Seriously? Do these people actually think the author of this article or perhaps the gunsamerica.com site are going to save up their names and then notify them when the guns are available? How lazy, foolish, and naive can people get? Plus, as someone said in one of the few intelligent posts here, with POS Obama banning warehouses full of South Korean M1 carbines, does anyone really think he (or any dirtbag Democrat prez/congress) is ever going to allow 100,000 handguns to hit the market?

  • Russ August 25, 2015, 10:34 am

The best way to keep up on this is go to the CMP website. Many years ago that is how I got my M-1 Garand, and she is a beauty.

I enjoy owning & shooting my Kimber 1911 45acp. I would have like to been around when John Moses Browning was churning out his master-pieces, I bet there’s some hidden genius in some of his less famous designs and prototypes. I am amazed that his guns and rounds have remained in service. Sure I’d love to collect a WWII government issue 1911. I’ve also always like it’s counterparts, the German Luger & Mauser broomstick handle pistol. It’s good to have hopes & desires,

  • Vanns40 August 24, 2015, 7:56 pm

I really find it difficult to believe all the “let me know — please notify me” comments here. I’ve never seen such a lazy bunch in my life. Everybody wants somebody to do the work for them. Do all of you belong to a high powered club or organization that meets the requirements of CMP? Have you even gotten off your lazy butts and checked out what you need to do to qualify to purchase from CMP? Oh, you didn’t think about that? Why not, because you’re so damn lazy you want it spoon fed to you that’s why. Why haven’t you purchased an M1? “They’re too expensive for me”. Yeah, but you think you’ll get such a great deal on a 1911. Geez, go buy one retail, you’re here for the wrong reason.

    • Michael Bosio August 25, 2015, 2:06 pm

My sentiments exactly! How can anybody who claims to be a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment not be a member of the CMP? How many of you belong to a CMP affiliated club? Do you even know where one is? If not then you’re never going to get one of these 1911s because there are criteria to be met. Better figure it out NOW! The CMP is the closest thing we have to a government sponsored outlet for surplus military arms and ammunition, the training in how they are used in competition, and the scheduling and sponsorship of these competitions. Where else can you go to a Small Arms Firing School, get first-hand instruction from members of the Army Marksmanship Unit, fire an across the course highpower match, ammo included, for less than $50? They need our support!

I’ve been shooting the CMP National Garand, Springfield, and Vintage military Rifle matches since 2000, and the National Rimfire Sporter matches since the second year they held them. I’m a CMP certified Garand, Sprinfield, Vintage Rifle and Rimfire Sporter clinic instructor. I’ve got my M1 and Springfield 03A3 from the CMP. If they do get these 1911s I’m sure I’ll get one of those as well. Remember, our grandfathers and fathers worked their asses off in the mines, mills, factories, and farms to pay for these firearms. They belong to us!

      • T August 26, 2015, 9:01 am

OK, then. I guess everybody not in the CMP doesn’t support the 2nd Amendment.

For all you lazy butts, here is how you go about joining the CMP.
        1. First read points 1. + 2. of this great article on GunsAmerica: http://www.gunsamerica.com/l/E2CD8B23-15BD-43EC-8DB6-FDA66C586AC0/Tc3m2/20150824_BlogDigest_134.htm
        2. Go find a club/organization near you that is affiliated with the CMP.
        3. Try to find someone in the organization who will sponsor you for membership in their club (helps if you have the same political views as them, served in the same branch of the service, hang out at the same bars, etc.)
        4. Pay your $200 to $2500 membership, and yearly dues.
        5. Put in 2-5 days a year working at the club’s range.
        6. Other conditions may apply.

Not everyone who supports the 2nd Amendment is in the CMP. There are hunters, folks who want to protect their families, weekend target shooters, and just plain folks who want to protect our Country from threats both foreign and domestic.

if anybody reading this article actually believes these pistols will become available to the American public I have some really cheap Florida beachfront real estate for sale. Do you think Obama won’t veto any legislation which proposes to dump handguns onto American streets ? South Korea has tons of M1’s he won’t make available to American hunters. no way these pistols see daylight.

Since the beginning of this nation, following each conflict, the government sold off excess weaponry as a means of recouping the costs of waging war. Those who carried weapons in war, including fully automatic weapons, were allowed to retain them. In some cases for a small price, and gratis in others.

Under the present regime, I would expect these weapons to be destroyed before they would ever be permitted to reach the hands of We the People. In the same way that US manufactured arms sold to Korea are being prevented.

Sign me up! The People’s Republic of California has no restrictions on “used” pistols and a “used” 1911 is possibly the easiest pistol there is to convert from “used” to “Freakin’ Awesome” without breaking the bank.

Please let me know when these 1911 become available as well. We would love to own at least one of these pieces of history. Most of our guns have a truly sentimental value that reaches far beyond there actual monetary values so these 1911 would be a welcome addition to our collection.

  • OldJarhead August 24, 2015, 9:55 am

Who knows what will come of this. Its nice to think that some of these old warhorses could finally make their way out of storage and into the hands of those who can appreciate them, not for superb accuracy or other fabricated requirements. I carried one during my service years. Rarely did I ever have a chance to fire it, as most firing took place at those sporadic range days. More damage has been done to these weapons by inexperienced troops disassembling them and cleaning them which was far too common. Gunny needed to keep people busy, then weapons cleaning it was! After the first “cleaning”, any chance of a matching gun disappeared as all parts went into the solvent can and were fished out by the young marines and reassembled. Still would love to have one. Shooter or not, its a piece of military history some of us would cherish.

  • petru sova August 24, 2015, 8:30 am

First of all this is never going to happen. There are more anti-gun Republicans than you think and even the pro-gun Republicans are subject to the hysteria that the News Media will conjure up. Also Obama would veto it immediately.

Now suppose by some miracle it passes. Would I buy one. No. Why? Well I am not a young man anymore so as an investment I would not live long enough to make any money on it. As far as owning it to shoot it the average G.I. 1911 is really a piece of crap. Years ago in the 1950’s we at our club found out the slides on these guns were not heat treated and very soft. When we had the guns accurized because of their non-existent accuracy and the slides did not hold up for very long at all.
Even when new these guns were lucky to get a 20,000 round service life and when in competition you can put that many rounds through one in only 2 seasons of shooting.

Another thing to consider that as long as 40 years ago an inspection of inventoried 1911 pistols showed many had hair line cracks in the frames, that is one reason the Military wanted a new modern handgun as the old guns were not repairable.

Besides the accuracy deficiency of these guns trigger pulls were terrible and sights so small a person with 20/20 eyesight will find these guns a challenge to shoot in the best of lighting conditions.

If these guns sell cheap enough (which they will not) many idiots will modify them as well destroying all future collectors value.

In the short run the gun is a bad buy as there are so many makes of modern 1911 guns out there as a shooter the 1911 Military gun is crap and you will probably pay almost as much for this worn out turkey as you could for a brand new 1911.

Still the people who believe in the 1911 myth i.e. that it will knock a man down, spin him around like a top or make him disappear in a red puff of mist as well as the nostalgia of a long ago war and the myth that all G.I.’s worshipped the gun (which was not true) will convince many people to fork over the big bucks to buy a worn out, inaccurate piece of crap.

    • Mike hunter August 24, 2015, 8:54 am

You are kind of right. It will be worn out. They all have been through at least one arsenal refurbishment. Due to hundreds of thousands of rounds being fired through them, they will be inaccurate.

CMP will likely auction them off. If that is the case, they will not be cheap. If they go to the store, they could be a decent price. 20,000 round barrel life in a pistol is good. You are silly if you disagree. I had to replace my current FNX-45 at 15,000.

The average person with 20/20 vision will not have issues shooting the pistol due to sights, more like recoil management. If you cannot still apply the marksmanship principles of GRIP, SIGHTS and STANCE… You shouldn’t shoot a 1911 in .45 ACP.

This sale is about preserving history, just like the M1 Garands, M1 carbines, M40X rimfire, M1903 and other firearms they sale. The more people that modify they creates a small market of factory original, unmodified pistols. This by default drives your pistols value up. I have one made and shipped to the U.S. Army in 1918 and it went through the war and retired after WWI with the soldier…and it is a shooter.

Sadly, most of the CMP pistols will be classified as a shooter, not a collector. CMP doesn’t sell unserviceable firearms as shooters. They always list in their description if it can be fired or not. I would get another and frame it. This is history for future generations…not just personal gain now. These are my thoughts because I can appreciate the item for what it is, a piece of American history.

I carried a 1911 for 15 years of my 20 years of service in the Marine Corps and I just retired this year. It has a cult following for a good reason. My team only hated the 7 to 8 round mags that you had to use.

      • angleback August 24, 2015, 9:12 am

I shot a 1911 over 40 years ago, in boot camp, and can attest to the weapon’s inaccuracy.

  • Raymond August 24, 2015, 8:05 am

Put me on the list also. I currently get emails from the CMP. I hope they pass that bill in May.

  • Steve Smith August 24, 2015, 8:03 am

  • Bill August 24, 2015, 7:43 am

Big difference between coming out of committee and being passed by the full House. Not to mention the Senate or (good luck with this) getting the bill signed by the creature in the White House. Bottom line is “would be cool but don’t hold your breath”.

    • Dean August 24, 2015, 9:16 am

And if they do sell them I doubt they’ll be anywhere near what might be considered a bargain price.

    • Hanlon Kitto August 24, 2015, 2:09 pm

Regarding passing out of committee vs. a full vote, NO KIDDING! There’s quite an amazing the display of sheer ignorance of the political process going on in this comment section.

“OOohh me to me too! Please notify me/contact me when they become available.”

How about “please notify me/contact me when you learn your 5th grade civics, then we’ll talk about whether you’re qualified to own a firearm”.

      Idiots.

  • jedi1111 August 22, 2015, 11:32 pm

1911 is World War I, not World War II.

    • realdeals August 24, 2015, 4:09 am

1911 is a year and happens to be when John Browning designed the pistol, the Colt 1911 .45. It was used then and throughout WWII and to this day. The CMP will likely get WWII military issue 1911 pistols. Nothing to do with WWI.

      • Mike Hunter August 24, 2015, 8:05 am

1911 is the year it was officially adopted into serve by the U.S. Military, hence the M1911. It is the model and year it was adopted for service.

    • Bert August 24, 2015, 4:37 am

You are joking right? 1911 being the model and not the year.

    • Bert August 24, 2015, 4:38 am

You ARE joking right? With 1911 being the model and not the year.

    • Rodney Caudill August 24, 2015, 7:45 am

      I would like a couple.

    • Mike Hunter August 24, 2015, 7:59 am

Depends of what the manufacturing date is on the pistol. Tons of M1911s were made after Nov 11, 1918. Some of the pistols will be WWI, some WWII and some post-WWII. One of the units that I was in donated a mixed batch.

    • Dean August 24, 2015, 9:13 am

No Dean We got those light sabers during the Vietnam era. USMC standard issue, the camo ones.

    • Jim Callihan August 24, 2015, 11:49 am

I’m very interested in purchasing one of these guns when they come available. My neighbor’s father left him his collection from WWll and among the nice bunch of guns, swords, bayonets, etc was a pristine 1911 that he carried. I look at the carbines, M1 Garand, and some of his other guns but the 1911 stands out, for sure. Keep me in mind

Around 100,000 pistol’s hit the market = Price drop

      • David August 30, 2015, 1:04 am

I’m guessing since guns stores have the capital, they’ll most likely purchase most of them for resale. Since it’ll be a hot ticket, I don’t anticipate the public will be getting any smoking deals on these.

    • Bill Reed August 25, 2015, 8:52 am

I am interested in getting one of these guns.
