LAPD May Start Sending Unarmed Service Providers to These 911 Calls

Current Events This Week

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) may soon be sending “unarmed service providers” — instead of sworn officers — out to certain 911 calls.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League on Wednesday shared a list of calls that would potentially qualify for this change up in personnel.

They are, per KTLA5:

1. Non-criminal and/or non-violent homeless and quality of life-related calls;
2. Non-criminal mental health calls;
3. Non-violent juvenile disturbance or juveniles beyond parental control calls; (won’t go to school);
4. Calls to schools unless the school administration is initiating a call for an emergency police response or making a mandatory reporting notification;
5. Public Health Order violations;
6. Non-violent calls for service at City parks;
7. Under the influence calls (alcohol and/or drugs) where there is no other crime in progress;

Craig Lally, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), indicated the move is designed to help a police force that is currently understaffed.

“We believe that in order to maximize the potential benefits of this new response model, it’s important that the initial list of calls where police officers will cease responding to is robust,” Lally said, per Fox11.

“It is time to end the debate about sending unarmed responders to appropriate 911 calls,” added Jerretta Sandoz, Vice-president of the LAPPL.  “Now is the time to roll up our sleeves and get to the hard work of implementing an alternative response model. We are prepared to enter into an expedited dialogue to take action.”

The city council has yet to approve the proposal, which includes $1 million in funding for establishing an “Office of Unarmed Response and Safety.”

“This list of calls presents opportunities that enable the city to develop a network of trained crisis workers and community-based responders to be dispatched for non-criminal behavior and situations,” said councilman Bob Blumenfield. “In order to build this network out, dedicated city staff is needed to focus on this work and realize its transformative potential.”

Well, what are your thoughts on this? Would you be willing to work as an unarmed service provider in a major city?

    I’ll sadly take a $20 bet that within the first month of its implementation, one of these unarmed responders gets violently assaulted. I’ll take a second bet that within a year one is killed. Dems /ANTIFA/ BLM got what it wanted ! Now wait for the chaos to ensue , I’m sorry get worse ! Its why I carry a gun everywhere!

    A whole lot of that list has turned into lethal force encounters in no time flat, and will continue to. The difference now will be that the responders will have no recourse except hope in the mercy of whoever flipped out for whatever reason.

    for easy identification of the social workers they will be issued jackets with an 8″ circle and a smaller 4″ inner circle on both the front and back.

      We already have social workers. They are not law enforcement field agents and are not trained to be sent into a potentially lethal situations.

  • bobsyouruncle March 2, 2023, 10:22 pm

    If there is a problem you will never hear of it.

  • Dr Motown March 2, 2023, 5:16 pm

    Because “non-violent” disturbances never escalate, especially when dealing with deranged folks, intoxicated folks, and combative teenagers….🙄
