After a long wait, LWRCI is ready to announce that their SMG-45 is now shipping. This pistol-caliber sub-gun has been called a spiritual successor to the Heckler & Koch UMP and takes UMP magazines, although functionally it’s a different breed.

It shares some design elements with AR-based pistol-caliber carbines but doesn’t use a straight blowback action. Instead, it uses a hybrid blowback/short-recoil operating system that requires less reciprocating mass and lets users install non-standard stocks including side-folders.

For now, LWRCI is launching with a real UMP stand-in chambered for .45 ACP. It ships with two 25-round magazines, with other magazines available for restricted states.

“We listened closely to shooters, operators, and customers throughout the development of this exciting new platform for LWRCI,” said company vice president David Ridley. “The SMG is truly a ‘Step-Up’ pistol-caliber carbine that offers our customers innovative features and comfortable ergonomics in a compact package.”

Other slick features include ambidextrous controls including the safety levers, an ambidextrous paddle magazine release and reversible forward charging handles. It comes standard with an LWRCI modular quad-rail handguard and LWRCI pistol grip.

LWRCI is currently shipping guns in the pistol configuration with an 8.5-inch barrel and SB Tactical folding stabilizing brace. Other accessories include an ALG trigger, Magpul MBus Pro iron sights and included rail panels and a hand stop.

The initial model weighs 5.9 pounds unloaded and measures in at just 15.25 inches long with the stock folded to the side. They are of course suppressor-ready with threaded barrels, although the action requires a muzzle booster to work suppressed.

The guns are currently on their way to store shelves and online dealers, with availability beginning as early as next week. MSRP is a bit steep at $2,995, although real-world prices are typically lower.

I’ll purchasing one of these… not sure about a collapsble stock.

  • Dsvid August 23, 2019, 3:16 pm

Will a collapsible stock be available instead of a folding stock?

  • Pantexan July 25, 2019, 10:05 am

    10 mm… Meh…

I’m a huge LWRC fan, I paid $2500 for their M6IC, dropped a bunch more on accessories and a trigger upgrade, and think it was well worth it. And I would buy one of these as well, except for two things – first is the price. $3000 is far too much for a pistol caliber carbine. I don’t doubt that this is one of the best, if not the best, PCC on the market, but they want more than I’m willing to pay for it. And second is the caliber. They make this in 10mm, and I might convince myself that $3000 for a PCC is worth it. In any other caliber? Not so much. If I’m shooting Underwoods or Buffalo Bores through it at about 1700 fps, that’s a lot different from a .45 that goes maybe 1200 on a good day.

There is no good reason not to have this in 10mm.

The only way I can shoot a 10 millimeter accurately is using a carbine or a short barreled rifle. It’s too much for me with most pistols.

How long before the “stabilizing brace” goes the way of the “bump stock”? Good idea while it lasts. I’d like to have a CZ 61 Skorpion with a “brace”.

Somebody decided to build a gun that does not do anything any other gun would do. It is not the only gun of its size or caliber. It does look unique, but functionally, it has many equals. The price leaves me gaping though. If it were one third the price, I might reconsider, but this does not seem worth the hype.

LWRC gives you outstanding quality, and you can expect to pay top dollar for it. I have one of their rifles, it’s the most expensive gun I own by a long shot, but man does it shoot well. Worth the price.

That being said, this PCC is too expensive. They bring the price down and make it in 10mm, I’ll line up to buy one. But $3K for a .45? No way.

The comments for the LWRCI SMG-45 are always the same. And they’re always pointless. “I can get THIS pcc for $600”. “I can build my own for THIS much.” To ALL of you, that’s like saying: “I can get a Prius for 1/3 the price of a Cadillac. The supposition being that just because both vehicles get you from point A to point B, they’re the same. Obviously they are not. With the Caddy and with LWRCI, you pay more but you get ALOT more in return.

Why not go with one of the HI POINT .45 acp carbines for around $350 instead?
    ***
Or spend around $800 bucks for a .30 cal M1 Carbine clone paratrooper folding stock gun instead? Half the price and twice the range and muzzle energy. With Hornady’s excellent expanding ammo–a far better choice. During WW2 tens of thousands of Japanese troops fell to this weapon with less deadly FMC ammo.

For 3k you can buy a HK USC and convert it to UMP… And have an HK. Might bite around 1500….

    • Billy July 19, 2019, 1:30 pm

It looks awesome, but I have to agree with madmortarman on being interested around 1500. Until then, I can use my 300 BLK pistol with subs in a 30 rd AR mag, get the same muzzle energy and still use my osprey 45 with it.

  • KEN July 19, 2019, 10:24 am

Even if it were in a 10mm I would still say price is a joke. NO THANKS! I have a mech tech upper for a glock in a 10mm and it on point with no ftf or fte and a 10th the price.

  • Mark barnes July 19, 2019, 10:06 am

PSA will have one out soon for less than six hundred dollars ! I can’t wait .

  • Dan F. July 19, 2019, 9:25 am

Nice gun, but they aren’t selling these to the military. Unless they find a bunch of dentists who don’t care about price, LWRCI will never sell enough to justify the production startup outlay. Which is fine, because we have enough price gouging in the gun industry. Wonder what Hudson ex-employees are doing today.

  • Mike July 19, 2019, 6:30 am

Very cool. But not ~$3k cool
