Lyft Fires Gun-Owning Driver Who Refused to Be Carjack Victim

Current Events Defensive Use of Firearms S.H. Blannelberry This Week

The rideshare app Lyft would rather have its drivers be victims of violent crime than have them use lawful force to be survivors of it.

That much is clear based on the case of Cynthia Norman, a Cleveland woman who this past weekend successfully defended herself from would-be carjackers only to be fired from the San Francisco-based company for violating its policy on weapons.

Norman talked to local media about the harrowing incident that began around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning in the city’s Nottingham neighborhood after she picked up two passengers in their 20s.

“He opens the door, he gets in and he said, ‘Oh, I’m cold. Do you care if I sit up front,’” Norman said, noting that was a violation of Lyft’s covid protocol to have a rider sit up front with the driver. “I could see it’s about to go bad.”

The riders drop-off point was the NEO Sports Plant, which given the time of night was closed.  At this point, she started to become extremely wary of their intentions.

“It starts to get pitch black. It’s dark,” Norman said. “I asked them, ‘Is where you want to be?’ And in my mind it’s dark. It looked like a factory. I already knew this was going to be some bull.”

The suspects started to physically assault Norman.

“The guy in the passenger seat says, ‘B****, it’s a carjack.’ When he punched me in my face, the one that’s behind me, he grabbed me around my throat like this,” Norman said. “This one in the back is like, ‘Hey man. Why don’t you use the knife I gave you?’”

Fearing for her life, Norman worked to retrieve the handgun located in the center console of her vehicle.

“I just leaned on the armrest because my gun is in the armrest, but the idiots don’t know it’s in the armrest,” Norman said. “He walked back to the door again. I just opened up the thing, pulled my gun out and just aimed toward the door and started shooting.”

The perps fled the scene.  But they didn’t leave empty handed.  They managed to steal the one tool Lyft sanctions when drivers encounter trouble: her cellphone.

See, Lyft instructs drivers to access the company’s “safety tool kit” on the app if they encounter problems with passengers.  But Norman asserts that depending on Lyft has severe limitations, especially when one’s life is on the line.

“If I don’t have the phone to call you to get help, what’s the next thing I need to do to get help? The only thing I can do is either pull out a taser, pull out a gun, a bat, or a knife, beat the hell out of somebody and then call the police,” Norman explained.

“You want me to not carry a gun or mace or taser? You want me to depend on you,” Norman continued. “I’m going to do what I’ve got to do and if that means you want to deactivate me, so be it, but I’ve got to return home.”

Norman will not face charges in relation to the incident.  All signs indicate that she acted lawfully when she drew her gun and fired on the suspects, according to police.

Criminal defense attorney Matt Bangerter told News 5 Cleveland that Norman is protected under the state’s self-defense laws.

“She does have the benefit of the Castle Doctrine and then Ohio just passed the ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law in December,” Bangerter said. “She’s certainly within her legal rights to defend herself if she’s being carjacked.”

But despite her lawful, what some might even describe as “heroic” actions, Lyft terminated its partnership with Norman after becoming aware of the situation.

Citing its policy on weapons, a spokesman for the company told 19 News that it stands by its decision to fire the young mother.

No arrests have yet been made. It appears the carjackers are still on the loose. Let us hope they’re not wise to Lyft’s weapons-free policy. Otherwise, unprepared and defenseless drivers may find themselves in Ms. Norman’s shoes.

Well, at least she didn’t shoot / kill one of her attackers so BLM won’t be burning down the city and threatening her life.

  • James January 18, 2021, 3:59 pm

You saved your life. Now you can go find a real job. Uber and Lyft both suck.

  • Todd January 18, 2021, 11:08 am

I don’t know. The whole thing sounds doggone hunky to me.
First, if you know the policy is *no weapons* and you feel the job is dangerous to need to lethally defend yourself, maybe you don’t take the job?

Second, in reading her narrative outloud, it sounds too ridiculous for even an old Charles Bronson movie.

Nope, I’m guessing it didn’t pass the smell-test with the cops either.

    Todd.

What motivation would Ms. Norman have to make this up? It doesn’t sound fishy at all to me. I think she’s lucky to be alive. She only did what she had to do and I applaud her.

  • Doc Holliday January 18, 2021, 11:07 am

Good job Mrs. Norman. You get to go home to your family because you were smart enough to defend yourself. Good on ya!
Lyft and Uber are out of my life for good. I can not believe they let this woman go. What is this country coming to when criminals have a better chance than a working woman.

  • Robert White January 18, 2021, 8:42 am

    Boycott Lyft!

  • Patriot January 16, 2021, 10:32 pm

Lawsuit time…Car is the driver’s personal property not Lyfts… No company can legally tell you what you can or can’t do in your own car…

  • Peter Brown January 16, 2021, 2:49 am

How dare that uppity woman attempt to save her life? That company is in frisco?
Is there anyone in Cleveland with sufficient backbone and integrity to hire that poor woman??
Lady, seek legal counsel . lyft’s agency agreement must prohibit contractors from exercising common sense.

  • Alex January 15, 2021, 11:01 pm

Typical of Lyft, they are led by radical left wing. This poor lady is trying to make a living, suffers a horrific attack and she’s victimized again by firing her. A preview of was coming to America

    • Deveron Reising January 18, 2021, 10:00 am

      Amen

  • Eric January 15, 2021, 7:25 pm

Seems like that could make it harder for Lyft to pretend that the drivers are contractors if they’re telling them what they can’t have in their car. Hit them where it hurts- having to pay benefits and taxes would cost them.

  • JOC January 15, 2021, 4:07 pm

Our country is in so much trouble. When criminals are pandered to and their lives are more important than their victims something is bad messed up.

lyft is a california company based in san francisco. Enough said.

  • Dale Holcomb January 15, 2021, 11:35 am

Watch for Lyft down fall. With a policy like that they out of business. Do they pay medical expense or offer medical plans for their drivers? I suspect not.

    • DELCO January 15, 2021, 5:09 pm

Dale I wish you were right but your not comprehending our big LYFT/UBER are, literally billions, and the fact both of those companies are apart of the new left wing Anti American culture there will be absolutely no backlash unfortunately. This driver is simply another victim of the cancel culture society that is not only being accepted by the media , but driven into society in ways maybe never to be returned to a free country. The teams are obvious. Right wing for freedom, left wing for so what we say or we will erase you from the world we control with a keyboard.

      • M.J. Damrau January 17, 2021, 7:01 am

If they can “fix” the voting and they can “black out” a sent message on f.b.. then our freedom is lost..

      • Jeff January 17, 2021, 8:14 am

Well, I just canceled my Lyft account and deleted their product from my life. I know it somewhat penalizes the other drivers but we have to vote against these companies by taking away their business.

  • Dirk January 15, 2021, 11:34 am

Lyft and Uber drivers are Not employees. They are Independent Contractors.

  • Jorge A Garcia January 15, 2021, 10:27 am

And we have the glorious moron media splatter it out there for all thugs to see,

READ ALL ABOUT IT, NO GUNS ON LYFT AND UBER, WE COME TO YOU AND YOU TAKE OUR CARS, SO

DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME LOOKING FOR A CAR TO JACK, WE PROVIDE IT TO YOU WITH FREE CURBSIDE

CONTACTLESS PICKUP AND NO POSSIBILITY OF DEFENDING OURSELVES, WHY GO ANYWHERE ELSE!!!

I have business in Cleveland, and I wont go on the east side without a gun at noon time, let alone in the middle of the night, this is a very courageous lady trying to make a living, I for one will never use lyft again!

    • paul January 15, 2021, 7:24 pm

The west side ain’t no picnic! The only reason you don’t hear about the crime here is they want people to think it’s safe to come out here and spend money!!!

  • SuperG January 15, 2021, 10:26 am

I guess car jackers and other violent felons are happy that Lyft condones their crime.

  • Bob January 15, 2021, 9:39 am

I stopped using Lyft when they started offering free rides to anti gun rallies a few years ago.

  • James Nye January 15, 2021, 9:37 am

She should sue the HELL out of Lyft for failing to protect her while also demanding compensation for lost wages and cost if every bullet fired.

  • Aplumb January 15, 2021, 7:44 am

The “no weapons” policy is about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of. If I’m driving for one of the rideshare companies, it’s MY car and MY life being used to make the rideshare company $$$. At the end of the day, is ME that has to be sure to return to MY home, MY family, and MY kids. I say HOORAY for this brave lady who carried a gun, even when she knew that it was against Lyft’s ill conceived policies. At least she’s still here to tell her side of the story. I certainly hope that many, many more drivers for these rideshare companies are breaking this idiotic policy of drivers not carrying a gun.

Why doesn’t SOMEONE create a rideshare company that puts the safety of its drivers AND passengers first? Can’t some 2A friendly person create a rideshare company that allows qualified drivers to carry a gun for the protection of themselves and their passengers? It’s time to stop bItChInG about the policies of these companies created by anti-gunners and have pro-2A people create their own competing companies.

    • DELCO January 15, 2021, 5:14 pm

I hear ya, we desperately need to have companies that can compete with these liberal controlled companies. PARLAR is the biggest example. Completely shut down by its completion . Talk about a MONOPOLY. Folks we are literally fighting for a freedoms.

  • paul January 14, 2021, 3:38 pm

I’s a sad day when ones life is less important than a company’s image! I hope this lady sues the hell out of them! Good job Cynthia!!!

    • gary holfstra January 15, 2021, 9:31 am

Sue them for what? Enforcing their policy? Like it or not, companies have the right to set policies for their employees – if employees don’t like it they can find another job.

That said – I will boycott Lyft from here on. If enough people do that, and it affects their bottom line, their policy will change.
