To all of the DIY-ers out there: You now have access to one more fantastic option for torque wrenches with the introduction of Lyman’s new ProDrive torque wrench.
Everyone who has worked, or will work on a firearm has either wished they had access to a torque wrench, or coughed up the money for one. These invaluable tools save the user from much more expensive repairs that arise due to bolts coming loose, or stripped threads. On top of this, torquing all bolts on a firearm to spec will pull out its highest potential because consistent torque is proven to increase accuracy. Now, about the ProDrive.
About the ProDrive
Lyman’s ProDrive torque wrench is a robust, adjustable wrench that can be set from 0 to 80 inch/pounds (inLb from here out). This wrench can be used to both tighten and loosen bolts. It comes pre-tested against an approved scale, with a certificate included that shows its accuracy. Additionally, thanks to the 1 inLb increments marked on the wrench, you can precisely adjust to the specified torque that your bolt needs. I was also told by Lyman that there is no need to return this torque wrench to zero between uses because it will retain its accuracy regardless.
Torque wrenches are simple to use, but the design of the ProDrive makes it comfortable to operate. The locking collar which keeps the ProDrive on the correct poundage is oversized and knurled. The grip is extremely ergonomic too. It has a large, three-sided handle which is polymer with rubberized grip zones on the apexes. This allows the user to really grip that handle and apply the needed amount of force to get up to 80 inLb. If this still isn’t enough for you to reach those high poundages, Lyman has also machined a 6 sided wrench flat into the wrench. With this, you can use an end wrench to get more leverage and easily tighten your stubborn bolt.
This torque wrench is shipping currently, which means that you should be starting to see it on shelves at your local Lyman dealers any day now. The MSRP is $94.97 meaning that you will likely see it for about $85.00 in stores. The ProDrive has been designed and priced to compete with other firearm-focused torque wrenches currently on the market. Included are 10 bits and a 1/2″ socket, all of which are commonly used on firearms.
