POF's Tombstone: A Futuristic 9mm Lever Action Rifle -- SHOT Show 2023

Making waves this month is POF’s new rifle chambered in 9mm. With a lever action.

The Tombstone hearkens back to when cowboys in the Old West had pistols and rifles in the same caliber. Today, this same sentiment brought about the creation of this handy rifle with a lever action.

The hammer extension comes standard and can be swapped to either side.

The Tombstone has a 16.5-inch barrel and is fully ambidextrous. It has AR-like magazine release buttons on both sides of the receiver.

The safety button above the trigger can be set to either side, and the hammer extension can be repositioned to the left side. Lever action rifles have long been favored for their ambidextrous operation.

The Tombstone weighs 5.75 lbs.

With a closed action, this gun is quieter than semi-automatic rifles but can be cycled quickly for successive shots. Its 1/2″-28-threaded barrel means you can add a can and make it really quiet.

Picatinny rails at the end, and M-Lok at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock around the forend.

The Tombstone is ready for tactical setup. The top Picatinny rail ends a few inches ahead of the receiver but picks back up at the end of the forend and also holds the blade front sight.

It also has M-Lok holes along the forend at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. The butt is fitted with a Magpul stock made for Remington 870s. You could potentially add a different 870 stock, but note that the lever is contoured to the Magpul.

this could be fail of the year. other than being an expensive range toy it is useless for hunting and self defense. even henry put out a 9mm pcc this year so why buy something akin to 9mm revolver w so many semi auto pcc’s on the market? pof is great ar15 co. they should have a great ar like 9mm carbine, if they dont already. if it was 10 mm it would be way more interesting and useful but kudos to pof anyway for making a short throw lever gun w a long mag. didnt work so good on honest outlaw. this is for diehard pof fans who own the phoenix pistol, but my favorite mag fed lever gun is the long ranger bc it has more useful chamberings. otherwise just buy one for 350 bucks and shoot 22.

    Great idea poorly implemented.

I really like the idea of a 9mm lever gun. I understand that Henry is also releasing one this year, but as a semi-auto.

While I have a Henry and a Marlin in 357 Magnum, the idea of a lever gun in 9mm is intriguing. If the Henry & Marlin have 10 rounds of 357 in the tube, it would probably be about 18 rounds of 9mm in the tube. That’s pretty good. In this case, it is poorly implemented. The POF is butt ugly and, with a proprietary magazine, it will not gain the popularity that it could.

They could have very easily released it with wood furniture for the stock at the very least. If it is using the Remington 870 stock, they should have used the wood for display and made the plastic an option.

I love the POF piston rifles, but when I saw this, all I could do is shake my head in disbelief. All I can think of is they needed a platform to sell more Phoenix mags.

I’m sure it’s well constructed and is quite accurate, but this painful to look at.

    Probably be popular in Hollywood.

Looks like a pellet gun I owned years ago. Looks like plastic and almost $2,000
No way. Kind of Ugly too.

  • Mongrel January 23, 2023, 9:12 am

Agree with the comments above wholeheartedly. Besides which, life is just wayyy to short to carry such a truly ugly gun. Like Tom S. said above, must be made for the Star Wars crowd.

If we must have a “futuristic (PLASTIC) 9mm lever gun”, I’d much prefer a Ruger PC Carbine model with a lever (think Savage Model 99).

This is an interesting gun implementing modern composite materials and useful features like the Magpul stock, picatinny rail, ghost ring sight, MLOK handguard and muzzle brake, but it is vastly overpriced. Another issue is their use of proprietary magazines. A gun chambered in 9mm should use Glock mags, they’re ubiquitous, durable, reliable and available in just about any capacity you want. I share Tom’s view and prefer wood furniture and blued steel for a lever-action rifle. But for those who want or need these features, don’t want a semi-auto and have a lot of money to spend, maybe this is the perfect solution.

  • Greg M January 23, 2023, 8:09 am

I never buy and ugly gun.

  • Thoughtful January 23, 2023, 6:36 am

Hmmm, uh, no. I like POF products and have several but THIS , and their Phoenix 9 mm pistol are way too expensive. Proprietary magazines are another negative. The ‘Tombstone” and POF’s “Phoenix” are both misses.

    • Howard Berg January 23, 2023, 8:55 am

Proprietary magazines: What are you thinking? If it is expected that I will carry my Glock, SIG, Ruger 9mm pistol and be able to have a lever gun that uses the same ammo, but not the same magazine (which I say lose the magazine and use a tube feed to begin with) kind of detracts from having a pistol and lever gun that shoots the same ammo.

  • Tom S January 23, 2023, 6:34 am

I nguess I’m old school when is comes to lever actions. I prefer wood and blued steel, not a gawd awful cheap looking syfy movie prop.

    • Rob January 23, 2023, 7:59 am

Looks like a solution in need of a problem. Just give me a Marlin in .357 magnum and I can shoot the same ammo as my handgun.
