Within two days of the January 22nd shooting at a Monterey Park, CA dance hall that killed 11, and left 9 injured, President Biden was again calling for an “assault weapon ban” in a knee-jerk response to the crime.

While it is true that this current scheme of firearm classification often lists nearly any firearm with two or more features commonly seen in military-style weapons, it was the simple fact that the Monterey Park shooter’s firearm came with a threaded barrel and 30-round magazine that earned it a designation of “assault weapon,” and doomed it to draw the focus of gun control efforts everywhere.
But therein lies the catch. The shooter’s gun — a Cobray M11/9 — was already illegal for him to own under California law.
Despite a cosmetic similarity to the fabled “Mac 10” submachine gun, this cheap cosmetic clone is functionally a 9mm semi-automatic pistol.
This also means that the shooter would not have legally been able to purchase the firearm in another state where it might have been legal, then cross state lines into California and bring the firearm back with him, as some social media users have suggested.

However, this hasn’t stopped Democrats and gun control activists across the country from parroting repeated calls for a renewed “assault weapon ban,” like the one Sen. Dianne Feinstein recently introduced.
However, many people are already beginning to wonder how banning a firearm that was already illegal, could make any difference.
Indeed, it pokes at the underlying question to nearly all gun-control efforts: when someone has already decided to break the most serious of society’s laws and take another person’s life, what could more gun laws possibly hope to accomplish? And what could anyone expect Congress to do at the national level that California hasn’t already tried?
Perhaps more importantly to the lawful gun owners throughout the country: What instead will be the unintended consequences to those of us who safely and responsibly enjoy our rights?
With a Republican-controlled House and almost evenly divided Senate, it would seem unlikely that a new “assault weapons” ban would have much of a chance of passing. But in the current political climate and 24-hour news cycle that fixates on tragedies like the recent ones in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay, gun owners know by now not to take anything for granted.

When you ban an already banned gun, what happens? Does it become “double-banned”? Or does the second ban cancel out the first ban?

A government gets away with whatever its people allow. A recent attempt to ban semi-automatic firearms across the state of Illinois was met with widespread resistance. 88 percent of the state’s counties refuse to enforce the governor’s mandate, and they can because of the Second Amendment. Additionally, sheriffs work for their communities, not for the state.
Unfortunately, this has not always been the case. Many historical and current dictatorships had their start when they stripped firearms from their citizens and robbed them of their right to rebel against injustice.
After he left $7 billion in military equipment in Afghanistan including “real assault weapons” I’d think he’d at the very least want us to defend ourselves after he GAVE our enemy “real assault weapons”.

It is now time for everyone to get their congress reps engaged in putting forth a Constitutional Amendment that would bar any and all public officials that would violate the Second Amendment Rights of American Citizens from having any type of armed protection provided by any and all government services. Secret Service agents doing
protective duties for an anti-gun president/vice president, unarmed. Police officers detailed to any duty regarding them, such as escort through Washington, unarmed.
Further reductions would be made in other types of protection. The “Beast” would be unavailable, no armored car at all. The president would ride in a four door sedan appropriate for the average citizen to own.
No Marines or other guards on the roof of the White House with Stinger missiles.

Fast forward 1 year past the proposed “assault weapons” ban and whatever collection/buy back/turn in scheme accompanies it. Now that all the banned firearms have been legally addressed, the next wave of mass shootings have occurred and the outcry from the gun banners is now what? Mandatory searches of every home that owns any guns? Or have ever owned any guns? Or maybe every home in the country? Oh, don’t forget the news reports of the huge increase in the number of ambushed law enforcement officers so that their guns can be stolen. Of course, there is also the increased number of hijacked arms shipments. And along with all this, there still is the soft on criminal prosecutions approach being taken towards any criminal except the ones created by the ban.
How about we look at harsher sentencing of career criminals and violent offenders, whether or not a gun is involved. Don’t have enough cell space? Build more. Helps the economy with construction jobs, correctional officer jobs, etc. And by the way, anyone else noticed that the number of school shootings were way less BEFORE they took prayer out of the schools?

Seems that it is illegal to make a criminal follow the law. Very few arrested for gun violations ever go to jail as there is a catch and release in almost all States. It is called PLEA bargaining and is the best tool for criminals to use.
