Springfield Armory 911: In case of Emergency, Drop the Hammer — SHOT Show 2018

Clay Martin Concealed Carry/EDC Industry News Max Slowik SHOT Show 2018

Springfield is showing off their newest family of firearms at SHOT Show this year, the 911s. Springfield 911 pistols are micro 1911s chambered for .380 ACP, designed to be light and unobtrusive for deep concealment.

While these look similar to other 1911-style .380s, through careful materials selection and engineering, Springfield’s managed to make these sleeker and lighter without dropping build quality or features.

Like the Colt Mustang and others, the 911s are hammer-fired, single action pistols designed to be carried cocked and locked, and to disappear even in tight-fitting formal, business and sport attire.

Overview

Springfield Armory 911: In case of Emergency, Drop the Hammer — SHOT Show 2018

Springfield is launching with two 911 models, one with an all-black finish and the other with a two-tone look. Both have 7075 T6 alloy aluminum frames with stainless steel slide assemblies.

These are tiny guns with sub-3-inch barrels and short, flat grips. Springfield’s 911 pistols weigh less than 13 ounces unloaded, with the magazines — no small feat for an all-metal .380 build.

They also have real sights. These 911 pistols come standard with Springfield’s Pro-Glo night sights, which pair a big yellow outline tritium front sight with a two-dot white outline tritium rear sight.

While these 911s are not fully ambidextrous they do have dual manual thumb safeties and all the controls are extended. It has large rear cocking serrations for easy slide manipulation.

Impressions

Springfield Armory’s 911 packs a lot of punch in a small concealable package. The lightweight 7075 T6 aluminum frame and black Nitride or stainless 416 steel slide measure 5.5 inches long and less than 4 inches high with a snag-free profile.

The 911 has some 1911 elements, although it is not one. The engineering department at Springfield Armory realized they could make the gun even smaller by keeping some 1911 design features while dropping others.

The result is a pocket pistol that is perfect for everyday carry. The controls are extremely similar to a full-size 1911, including a thumb safety. The trigger is awesome, which is easy to do when you are backed up by a manual safety. The sights are large for this category and very easy to use.

Concealed Carry guns can often be too large to carry everywhere or be too small to be shootable. And some carry guns have near useless sights and terrible triggers. None of this is the case for the Springfield 911 series.

If you are in the market for a very small and light carry gun, this one is a winner. I bag on the .380 round a lot, but this little gun will sling them. With this platform, I can absolutely hammer targets.

I have more than a few rounds on the 911, as I’ve spent time on the range with it a few months ago. Even if you think the gun looks a bit different it is worth checking out.

Pricing

Both 911 models have a suggested retail price of $599 which works out to about $500 or less on the street. That’s not at all pricey for guns with best-in-class weight and not just real sights, but night sights, standard.

On top of it these have the Springfield name backing them for aftermarket and customer support. Finding holsters for these won’t be a problem even at launch.

Copy of a sig p238. Can’t gd better than my p938 though. Compact reliable and a better n potent caliber in 9 mm

So, Springfield armory copied the SIG P238, that was a copy of another redesigned copy of the original 1911?
    How original.
I have a (sort of original) P238 in my left rear pocket right now.

    Hello
Just like the Kimber Micro, when they offer a cocked-and-locked pistol and the grip safety is one item that was pared away for weight or cost savings or whatever, they lost me. I’ve had that durn thumb safety get inadvertently switched “off” too many times before, ‘specially ambi ones.

I love 1911’s, I carry one occasionally, I also have a Browning 1911-380, it’s a handy, nice carry gun also. But I don’t see the reason for a pocket pistol of the 1911 design, my DAO Bodygard .380 can be dropped in a pocket (coat or pants) and carried safely all day, I’d never, repeat never try that with a cocked and locked 1911. They’re are much better guns to carry IWB or outside the waistband in a holster than a micro .380. This gun really seems to be a solution to a non-existant problem.

Unfortunately this pistol like many others is not available to the second class citizens of Kalifornia, only UNITED STATES citizens!

    • kb31416 January 25, 2018, 1:36 pm

You people need to take your state back.

    • DK January 25, 2018, 1:49 pm

You need to move to a sane, gun friendly state my friend.

  • Godfrey Daniel January 25, 2018, 11:44 am

    A Sig P238 by any other name…

  • buhbang January 25, 2018, 10:11 am

another copycat from springfield…. I won’t buy it, or any other springfield armory. biggest idiots i have ever dealt with and the easiest way not to deal with them is to not buy any of their guns. I don’t miss being lied to, and i dont have to continually send my gun back to be fixed. when they say they will return it in 6 weeks, and then keep it for over 12 weeks. too many good companies with knowledgeable employees out there, you don’t have to put up with lying springfield employees who don’t know anything about their companies guns, or how to fix them.

Apparently you’re the one in a million. I’ve had over 60 Springfield pistols, many from.the custom shop. I’ve never had one gone over two to three weeks from when I shipped them. Awesome courteous staff and the best quality 1911 for the money. Strange you’re the only person I’ve heard of in 35 years, complain about them.

  • Brandon January 25, 2018, 9:40 am

Too bad it’s S.A. and what those proposed in IL makes them a no go for me in terms of buying from them. Also it’s just a sign I’m, so nothing new. Sucks to cuz my 1st 1911 was a S.A. back in the day, but never again. 🙁

    • DK January 25, 2018, 1:45 pm

Brandon, why don’t you rethink your comment a little, retype it and give us something we can actually understand.

      • Gerald Leroy Clauson January 25, 2018, 2:59 pm

It ain’t hard to understand; after Springfield sold out supporters of the 2nd amendment, he isn’t going to purchase any more S.A. products. Also, it’s just a Sig, so nothing new here.

        • Rusty January 27, 2018, 8:31 am

And how did they do that?

  • Michael January 25, 2018, 9:34 am

    Yawn.

  • DennyP January 25, 2018, 9:27 am

So it is a copy of a Sig P238.

    • The T January 25, 2018, 10:52 am

Amen . . . and it could not be a better carry than my Sig P238.

    • Mak January 25, 2018, 11:54 am

Which is just a copy of the Colt Mustang…

  • Retrocon January 25, 2018, 9:14 am

Why do i feel like Sig dejavu?

    Here we go again…

“When they release it in 9mm…”

    • Rusty January 27, 2018, 8:30 am

hmm I said Mustang when sig and Kimber made them. And .380 is 9mm. 9×17

  • KenW January 25, 2018, 6:12 am

I wouldn’t trade the ‘ol lady’s Colt Government Pocket Lite for it but I’d take it to go along side it.
Now if they could just shoe horn a 45acp mag into it …

    • thomas driscoll January 25, 2018, 9:00 am

      it’s called a Kimber ultra!

      • Rusty January 27, 2018, 8:31 am
