Radically Compact & Exceedingly Portable: Springfield Armory's SAINT Edge PDW - SHOT Show 2020

Springfield has brought several compact self-defense-purposed weapons to SHOT 2020. Among them, the SAINT Edge PDW is maybe the most balanced personal defense weapon (PDW) in terms of size, firepower and deployment speed. This 5.5″ barreled, 5.56 NATO-chambered AR-style pistol is a sweet little package.

We were able to talk one-on-one with Springfield Armory Media Manager Mike Humphries at SHOT about this new product, so check out the video below:

We were really impressed by the compactness of the Edge PDW after handling it in person. It would slide under nearly any vehicle’s front seat, inside a nightstand, or even in a bathroom drawer. And all you have to do in order to start dispensing freedom is rip open the brace, flick the safety off and start squeezing the trigger.

Had my FFL bring one in for me, pricey but less than the Maxim and has a thinner handguard, had all the advertised goodies like flat trigger, ambi safety, Hate brake, Maxim gen 7 brace…..BUT did NOT have the flip up BUIS and the receiver was the standard no frills Saint marked lower instead of the sculpted Cheveron mag well lower. Still was charged the MSRP, which was disappointing, so buyer beware of possible bait and switch.

These things are louder than a .50! Coming back east from the BIG SANDY in Oct. I saw many caravans with CA. plates heading east. I agree with HEM. Move out and vote conservative from now on. We have more MG’s in my small town in IN. than the whole state of Ca. and it’s not even listed on the Rand McNally road atlas. I would like to try this Saint out as all my carry guns are SA.

I brought the regular version of the Saint pistol. Runs flawlessly, will ring steel out to 200 yards, compact, and well appointed ergonomics. That said it was about $800.00+/- and fits my needs. The Edge is pretty cool too. Got to see them as a firearms inspector at the last NRA Convention. Also talked to the guys at Maxium about the Hate Brake. A lot of engineering went into it and I can see one on my pistol in the near future. Guess it depends on what one wants to spend.

    5.5″ barrel?

    All right.

5.56 as choice of caliber for that length barrel? Not so much.

    • BR549 February 3, 2020, 5:38 pm

I’d like to know how they suppressed the otherwise ENORMOUS fireball and the noise level that the 9″ Keltic PLR-16 was plagued with ………. AND ……… what are the ballistics?

  • justjim February 3, 2020, 11:01 am

If you run (to another state), you’ll just die tired… an broke(r) and in a strange place. Think if all that have run would have just stayed in place and put in the hard work…Voting, calling their representatives, campaigning for candidates, even running for office. Yup; it’s time consuming and difficult, Nancy.
And what if the founders had just run?

    • nope February 3, 2020, 7:44 pm

This is the mentality costing other states. CA is so entrenched that there is no benefit to staying. Meanwhile, the CA voters in favor of stricter laws are also moving out for greener pastures elsewhere, and shifting the votes as they do so. Staying behind to lose while they branch out and win? TX almost flipped, while CA didn’t budge one iota.

  • TED R BLACKWELL February 3, 2020, 10:09 am

Nice design, but how much velocity loss in the 5.5″ barrel? If I’m paying that much for it, I’d want an integral supressor so I won’t lose my hearing after 20 rounds.
Should have had a 9″ barrel and offered it in 300 Blackout.

This would be a fantastic defense weapon if only it didn’t cost so much. I am a 68 years old Disabled Veteran and have been living on a fixed income for the last 22 years. Being on a fixed income is a horrible situation to be in. The Veterans Administration believes that a Disabled Veteran can live comfortably on less than a thousand dollars a month. Try it, it’s very hard. I’m just glad that I had purchased a few weapons before I had to retire because of injuries received while fighting in so many wars for our Country. It would seem that the VA would be able to pay Disabled Veterans at least a livable wage. I have pressured the VA so many times for more money but have always been denied so I finally just gave up. If the VA won’t pay me more money maybe Springfield Armory could lower the price for the Saint Edge Pistol for all disabled veterans but I won’t hold my breath.

    • Irish-7 February 3, 2020, 2:45 pm

Sorry to hear about your situation! We had financial difficulties when I first retired from the Army. It took the VA a year to give me a decision, which initially came to 90% disabled. I filed for Individual Unemployability, which moved me up to the 100% rate. We’ve survived on that since, over 9 years now. A Total & Permanent rating pays about $3000 a month, so I’d recommend to keep fighting. God Bless and Good Luck!

Hey Norman, First, thank you for your service to this great nation. Second, I have an AR15/556 Anderson Arms 7.5″ pistol that I would bet my family’s life on (3K+ rounds with no issues). If you do some searching, you should be able to find / build a similar unit for 1/3 the price ($600) of the “Saint Edge Pistol”. The AR15 7.5″ pistol is currently a great option for home defense and is also accurate at 150+yards. Bless you my friend

So this is a copy of Maxims PDW which is already available now I have the 7.62x39mm

This site must be like the NRA. Nothing appears in their periodicals unless the sponsor pays a hefty fee.

  • John February 3, 2020, 4:22 am

Good luck getting it to us here in commiefornia, where we are no longer land of free, home of the brave.
Today, like other states will also soon be, land of government control, home of government slaves, or just locked up in one of the “Private Prisons” fastest building prison state of Amerika

    • Votewurfeet February 3, 2020, 7:48 am

So move to a free state…or, if 75% of registered Republicans showed up to vote…you could kick the libtards out. Typical “my vote will never count” baloney. Of course it won’t if only 40% ever show up. Like they say…”half of winning is just showing up”.

      • GOP2A February 3, 2020, 9:10 am

Votewurfeet, you are so correct. I’m infuriated with voters here in Virginia. They take up arms and rally city councils demanding declaration of 2A Sanctuary and rally Richmond on Lobby Day demanding gun rights, but gave the elections away to the Democrats rather than voting.

        • JEREMIAH HOFFMAN February 3, 2020, 10:17 am

It’s because the dems are offering free shit

        • Comanche February 3, 2020, 4:15 pm

You’re great state of Virginia has been bought and paid for by his hind-ass Bloomberg, it’s sad to watch, Good Luck in the future!!!%

        • Ivotedbut February 4, 2020, 12:43 pm

In my district, the democrat ran unopposed for some reason. I wonder how many other districts had that problem as well. And no, I didn’t vote for her, I left that blank.

      • Retrocon February 3, 2020, 9:13 am

Too late. Motor-voter laws have registered millions of illegals to vote because they don’t check status after receiving the DL form. Probably account for those “popular votes” Hillary “won” by.

    • John Michael February 3, 2020, 8:14 am

John, no reason to complain about where you live by choice. Either move from Cali or stop whining. FYI – I was born and raised in Cali and when I was 18 and able to make my own choice I moved as fast as I could.

    • Marty Ashland February 3, 2020, 8:52 am

When hunting in California, I’ve noticed that all shots have a tendency to pull to the left.

    • Area52 February 3, 2020, 9:16 am

Unless the courts step in and throw out most if not all those insane CA gun laws, I agree with the suggestion to move. In California, supporters of the second amendment are either :

      outnumbered
suffer from apathy or are too lazy to vote
      Vote for the wrong candidate
are happy with the current gun laws ( yeah I don’t know how that makes them in favor of gun rights)

There was a recent court opinion that threw out the CA magazine restriction. I don’t know how that turned out other than it appealed by CA and the ability to buy over ten round mags were put on hold.

If you do leave that commie block state, dont come voting for tha same crap you leave behind. Recently some reporter was talking to someone from commifornia who went to Texas. They told the reporter that they liked everything besides the politics. Thats what we dont want. People like that are not welcome in our Red states.
