TacSol is at it again with a new backcountry rifle, the Owyhee Takedown Bolt Action .22 LR! If you are unfamiliar with TacSol, or Tactical Solutions, they have been in the game for quite awhile. They manufacture high-quality guns, barrels, and parts for rimfire. Many of their barrels are distinctive, using a ChromeMoly-steel barrel insert that is enshrouded in aluminum. This gives the barrel rigidity, but without all the weight of a traditional bull barrel.
In talking with TacSol, a bolt action .22 rifle has been in the works for a long, long time. It was a project that had been talked about for approximately 15 years and sat on the back burner until about 2 to 3 years ago when they began actively making it a reality.
This year at SHOT Show 2020 they unveiled the Owyhee Takedown Bolt Action Rifle. The Owyhee Rifle borrows it’s name from a range of mountains in Southern Idaho, near where TacSol is located. And it is a turnkey option for adventures out into the wilderness.
The rifle is designed around the Magpul X-22 Backpacker Stock. The stock itself was originally designed to accommodate the Ruger 10/22 Takedown. TacSol has modified the stock slightly to fit its new Bolt Action Receiver.
The TacSol X-Ring (semi-automatic) receiver shares the same footprint as the Ruger 10/22. Their new bolt action receiver of the Owyhee is a modified version of their X-Ring. It keeps the same external dimensions, but replaces the semi-automatic action with a short and smooth bolt action.
The Owyhee Rifle packs all of the features you’ve grown to love with TacSol, from their rigid lightweight barrels to fiber optic sights, integrated top rail and smooth actions. Not to mention the advantages of the Magpul X-22 Backpacker Stock with internal magazine storage and tough polymer construction.
It builds on the above features with a few new ones. For starters, a smooth bolt action, which lends itself to being carried in different locations where local laws may prohibit semi-automatic rifles. Additionally, my favorite feature, is a new magazine release located on the front of the trigger guard. It is very intuitive and makes dropping the magazine very easy, especially compared to the factory Ruger design.
The Owyhee Takedown Bolt Action .22 LR Rifle will be available for purchase in Q1 with an MSRP of $1,065 and a street price of around $879. While we haven’t had a chance to put in time with the new Owyhee Rifle, it has all the features for a great outdoor companion. Check back for a full review in the future.

I handled this gun in a store. It has a smooth bolt action, the steel bolt does not drag against the aluminum receiver it has a roller built around it. Think of a bearing pressed and recessed around the bolt handle.
The barrel is fluted aluminum and has a pressed stainless steel sleeve into it.
Nice fiber optic sights, threaded barrel and a neat light stock. Mags are ruger 10/22 mags.
The savage bolt action .22 next to weighed twice as much and the bolt felt like it was cycling after having been buried in sand it was so gritty.
Will this OWYHEE run a Ruger BX-25 magazine reliably ?
Ideal for Australia and places where semi autos are forbidden. We need an additional licence requirement for semi autos, here. I would love one BUT the price here will be $1795.00 Au 🙁 Guess I’ll stick to my PWS Summit
Yeah with the suggested Retail price of over $1000 for 22 bolt action when you could buy the best 22 ever to have made a Ruger 1022 for under 300 bucks they are insane and I hope they go out of business for it
Well good luck with that, gentlemen Make it an 18″ barrel, in 6.5 or .308, add in quick detachable scope mounts, and bring it in for that price and I’ll look again. For now, the Marlin 64 for $249.00 seems to be a better deal.

Companies are pricing themselves right out of business these days. $875.00-$1000.00 for plastic and aluminum bolt action 22? Ridiculous!
And yet another disappointment. Doesn’t anyone know how to make a 22 Mag ? Here’s another instance here 22 Mag could have been used easily. Being a bolt action. Yeah lets give in to the law makers. And not do a semi auto. $800 for a 22 rifle with a bolt action is just ludicrous, IMO. I have been waiting for Henry to take the A7 platform & convert the 22 to a 22 Mag. I was at a shot show in 2017. Spoke with a representative. I have been waiting patiently. Apparently it’s a difficult task for all these so called gun makers. They will make a AR in almost any platform, except a 22 Mag. It must be a impossible feat for them to complete. LOL
