Individuals carrying concealed handguns unholstered and brandished their firearms this week during racial justice protests in Eugene, Or., and Austin, Tx.
In Eugene, the standoff ended without injury or shots fired, but the Austin incident resulted in one fatality. Both confrontations involved individuals who were attempting to drive cars through Black Lives Matter protests but were stopped and approached by protesters. In both incidents, the protesters were holding firearms as well.
In Austin, a 28-year-old white man named Garrett Foster was shot and killed after he allegedly approached a vehicle that had been stopped during a protest. Foster was participating in the protest and carrying an AK-47.
The driver of the car, who fired five rounds from his vehicle, claimed that Foster had pointed his rifle at him. Austin police chief Brian Manley told reporters on Sunday that as the driver turned a corner, a crowd of protesters surrounded the vehicle and began striking the car.
“His account is that Mr. Foster pointed the weapon directly at him and he fired his handgun at Mr. Foster,” the chief said of the driver.

The driver’s name has not been released, but police say he called 911 shortly after the incident and is cooperating with the investigation. He is also licensed to carry a handgun in Texas.
Eyewitnesses interviewed by the New York Times claim that Foster did not raise his rifle but did approach the vehicle.
In a livestream of the incident posted on Facebook, a car’s horn can be heard honking while somebody yells, “Everybody back up!” As protesters converge on the vehicle, five shots can be heard.
An additional three shots follow shortly after, which police say were somebody else firing at the fleeing vehicle. Police say that individual has been apprehended and is cooperating with the investigation.
Another tense standoff occurred in Eugene, Or., between an armed driver and Black Lives Matter protesters, but “cooler heads prevailed” and no one was injured, according to Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner.
As in Austin, a driver was attempting to drive through a street that had been blocked by protesters. He began to exchange words with the people in the street, and he at one point opened his door and pulled out his handgun. Then, one of the protesters pulled out his own handgun, and the men pointed their firearms at each other.
“We had a hasty team on our way to deal with that because it looked like it could have gone bad in a hurry,” Skinner said. “Cooler heads prevailed and the truck ended up leaving. We had guns pointed at each other on both sides, and so at that point in the protest with the number of people around, trying to be strategic about how we get in there to deal with it is a tough one. And then he drove off.”

In a video of the incident posted on Reddit, protesters can be heard yelling at the man in the truck to go home while the driver yells at the protesters to move. The man opens his door and points what looks like a 1911 at one of the protesters.
He soon closes his door and begins to drive away, but proceeds straight through the intersection while protesters yell at him to turn right (where it looks like the other traffic had been directed). His truck is again stopped by protesters, but this time one of them has a handgun trained on the driver. The pair point their guns at each other for about 20 seconds until the driver finally closes his door and drives away.

The driver in Austin is a Army SSG 11B (Infantry) who literally got caught up in the protest driving down a public way (street) and found himself surrounded. The BLM protestor was a former airman aviation maintenance type who wanted to look tactical and cool. Photographic evidence shows hom leveling his AK towards the drivers window, thus leading to his being fatality shot. The driver defended himself as should anyone, instead of being drug out of your car and being beat to an inch of your life or death.

I have tried to live a peaceful life; minding my own business. I feel that I must now speak to ALL who will listen. I was serving my Country with the USMC in the 60s while people back at home were Protesting. We had heard, seen, and/or new of the Massive Protests. They all seemed peaceful, and all had an opinion. Most of these people were either Veterans or College Students, with a smattering of hippies, draft dodgers,and militants. The thing is, is that they weren’t sucking the government tit, or otherwise too lazy to work. They also knew that they could express their grievances without being destructive, hurling insults, using offensive language. In short, being rude, disrespectful, and acting like a hooded criminal. Most important of all, is that these protesters were Independent Thinkers. They were Not an Organized Mob like we now see in ANTIFA and BLM. There is a Right/Wrong way to effectively communicate your point. If they Really Care about change, maybe they should think about these things First. Then maybe we can have a Real Discussion about Real Change.

Back during the protest in St Louis over Michael Brown, an ambulance caring a very sick child got stuck and they wouldn’t let it through. The ambulance had to turn around and travel an extra 15-20 minutes to get to the hospital. The street that they routinely shut down was right in front of a children’s hospital and a major university hospital.

They have that right protected under the constitution so much so if there was a cop there he could not ask why. With regard to the protestors on the other hand I am pretty certain they did not have the required permit. Because as far as protests go you are not allowed to block roads unless you have applied for a permit and it’s been organized with the local police department to block off the roads and redirect traffic. These people that claim to be peaceful protesters are pure trash and thugs.

A couple of things bother me here…. #1 People have a right to live – and pass peacefully. The “protesters” do not have the right to block traffic or impede or violate the rights of others. The driver had just as much right to “protest” back that he was being blocked and delayed unnecessarily. People are not truly protesting peacefully as another person commented earlier; these protesters appear to be trying to force their views and opinions upon others using questionable means, often using unlawful means and employing stupid street tactics that tend to instigate and elicit negative reactions by purposely obstructing/blocking traffic, parading through neighborhoods provoking the residents, etc. And then claim they are being victimized when others who are simply trying to go about their business have the “nerve” to respond when in fact their rights are being unfairly and inconsiderately imposed upon. #2 It seems hypocritical that the media today, with all this politically correct BS about the way words are being used, seems to feel that it’s OK to call it a “Mexican” standoff or call someone who acts a certain way a “Karen.” While I don’t personally feel the words and phrases often used to describe certain events or action are meant in racist manner, the words could be labeled racist terminology…IF we’re all going to be so overly sensitive about words and how they’re used. Everyone seems to be so hyper-sensitive now that nothing can be uttered anymore without offending someone. People simply need to be courteous and respectful of each other and stop using petty excuses to go around acting like fools in public and then daring decent folks to just sit back and take it. I’m sure there are a lot of decent folks out there protesting and I’m all for standing up for your rights and speaking your mind BUT there is a decent way to go about things. It’s unclear what resulted in the drivers getting caught in the demonstrations. It happens. If either went there knowing, they made a bad choice. Placing yourself and/or family in a bad spot isn’t prudent. Either way, physically attacking, trying to breach or threatening a vehicle occupant with a weapon is an invitation to get run over or shot. The incident in Austin will become more clear once the investigation is completed. The incident in Eugene seems a bit troublesome for me.
If I make a mistake and get stuck, I will not sit with windows rolled down and argue with protestors. I will definitely not exit my vehicle. I’m sure there is more to the story, but this man did not appear to be trying to de escalate, but appeared to participate. From the limited info we see in these videos, this man would not want me on his jury, even though as a law abiding EDCC, I am usually biased against rioters. In fact, I carry a rifle in my truck for such situations.
CC persons… try to avoid the situation in the first place. If that fails, remain in your vehicle with windows up. Do not engage the protestors. If they block your way, sit still. Call the police. If they damage your vehicle, call the police and have good insurance. If they attempt to breach your vehicle or threaten you with weapons, protect yourself, either with your firearm or the gas pedal. Once out of the danger area, call 911. Be safe, folks. Get training and think.

I keep reading that ‘insurance will take care of the property damage’. I think standard insurance policies exclude loss from riots and civil unrest. That could be one reason the elite insist these are “protests” and not “riots”.
