Whata-Gun! Custom AR Pistol Honors Texas Burger Joint, Whataburger not Amused

Authors Industry News Jordan Michaels This Week

Texans love guns. Texans also love Whataburger. Put them together, and you’ve got a viral phenomenon as big as the Lone Star State.

Houston-based HTX Tactical created the one-of-a-kind Whataburger AR pistol for an unnamed client. After posting a video of the firearm on their Facebook page earlier this month, they’ve received coverage from some of the biggest media outlets in the state.

“It was just a fanatic Whataburger customer that came in,” co-owner Javier Garcia told Chron.com. “Obviously, Texas, firearms and Whataburger go hand in hand, whether you enjoy (firearms) or not.”

The orange and white AR pistol features the Whataburger logo on the arm brace and lower receiver as well as the burger company’s “Since 1950” tag line on the dust cover. HTX Tactical even included a P-MAG painted to look like a box of fries.

Whataburger was not amused. Whataburger Corporate Communications released this statement to Chron.com:

“This product is not affiliated or licensed by the Whataburger brand in any way. Whataburger did not give HTX Tactical permission to use our brand and logo, and we are reaching out to HTX Tactical to cease distribution of this product.”

It also appears that the burger company has forced HTX to scrub its logo from their social media. Today HTX removed all images and videos of the firearm from their Facebook page. They also posted this video:

One of the video’s commenters pointed out that the burger joint should have been happy with the free coverage. HTX agreed.

HTX Tactical was founded in 2015 and specializes in AR and Glock parts. The company offers a wide variety of firearms and accessories along with custom work on rifles and handguns. Last year they created a Houston Rockets-themed pistol for Houston rapper Paul Wall, and they just released images of an all-gold Superman 1911 for NBA legend Shaquille O’Neill.

They’ve also done custom paint jobs on a credit card gun, an FN 5.7, and other AR-15’s.

The customer reportedly paid $1,800 for his new Whataburger gun.  To see more cool creations you can head on over to HTXTactical.com.

Hey what-a-boooger why don’t you move to CA!?! Never cared for your food all that much anyway!! Guess it’ll be cold soup in my truck instead of anything wataboooger!!! Ever again!!!

When Texas legislators finally passed “open carry” a few years ago, the Whataburger corporation announced it would not allow open carry in its restaurants so as to not “offend the sensibilities” of its other customers! While I truly love Whataburger food, I chose not to patronize those restaurants since that time. They of course are still open, and I am still eating burgers (albeit at other restaurants). I’m sure they have lost more business than they gained by their decision. My disposable funds (like many people) are used to support companies and individuals that share my personal values and beliefs. Businesses should remember that and stay out of politics.

More commie lovers or should I say democrats, boycott them.

  • Cody March 30, 2019, 7:32 am

Get ready to watch your stock take a nose dive. You are no longer welcome in Texas Whata Disappointment.

You guys are now just Dicks with food.

I believe Whataburger failed to realize that a lot of their customers in our Great State of Texas are not only gun owners and outdoor enthusiast. We have a tendency to travel a lot for hunting and fishing and Whataburger is a welcome sight at 3:00 in the morning when you have been traveling all night. I might have to look for a different place to stop from now on if they are not going to support me as a legal gun owner.

  • Victor March 29, 2019, 4:05 pm

Born a Texan & always a Texan, Whataburger just lost my business as well.

  • Clint W. March 29, 2019, 1:22 pm

I’ll bet any other liberal agenda from abortion to pedophilia that was referenced to Whataburger would be praised by the corporation. There was one in my town, but it closed up due to lack of business, not that we don’t like burgers, but theirs did not match up to even the Burger King here.

I have loved Whataburger since I had my first one back in the late 60’s. They are not “too salty and covered in mustard” as one commenter posted. You can get one any way you like, even if you want mayo on it (yuk).
However, now that Whataburger has stepped all over their collective dicks, I will be avoiding them like the plague.

Phil in TX, who used to be a big Whataburger fan.

    • Ricky B. March 29, 2019, 8:28 pm

“Used to be a big Whataburger fan.”

Now that kind of conviction-about & dedication-to any specific political cause is far beyond anything I ever hope to achieve my friend. While it’s difficult to not respect that kind of extremism, I can both admire your willpower and still continue to enjoy me some Whataburger… So God bless you bro!

If they only made one, and didn’t claim it to be sponsored or endorsed by Whataburger, I think she’d be legal precedent to protect them under the first amendment. Maybe Rogers v. Grimaldi? Or Moore v. U of Alabama?

  • Larry Rowe March 29, 2019, 12:00 pm

Didn’t someone say ” any publicity is good publicity ” ? I get the copyright deal, they could have put the logo on a child porn video, but HTX makes great stuff and should have run it by them first saying this could be big for both of us !!

  • James Guidry March 29, 2019, 10:09 am

As a 5th-generation expatriated Texan, I have wished for Whataburger countless times in these northern wastes. No more! If their collective “skin” is that damned thin, they are no longer worthy of MY patronage, let alone anything remotely related to being “Texan” in nature. I have consumed my last (as I am sure others will react to similar ‘restaurants.’ Get affectionate with my backside, Whataburger! You all can urinate up a large piece of braided twine. Dairy Queen? I’m back…

  • JimmyC March 29, 2019, 9:57 am

Overcooked, salty and covered in mustard. I live half a mile from a Whataburger and I wish it was an In and Out.

    • KO March 29, 2019, 11:05 am

Other than illegals, people are fleeing. California in droves due to politics, taxes crime and ironically, an insane cost of living. If In-n-Out were to fold, the state would follow!

  • MB March 29, 2019, 9:56 am

To each their own, but I don’t understand the stylized guns. Guns are tools, would you paint your hammer to match your lowrider? I don’t get it. But if some bozo wants to make his gun look like a hamburger or a pimps pistol, that’s fine with me…Just keep that crap away from me.

  • Singleshotcajun March 29, 2019, 9:42 am

As a Texan I can tell you that this is a stupid move by Whataburger . Might be different if we were talking about many guns but this is a one off. Hell, they could have offered to license it and make more, they have sold but now that ship has sailed. As for me I have one more business to add to my do not buy from list and I like Whataburgers 🍔

  • MagnumOpUS March 29, 2019, 8:24 am

Whataburger must have a corporate antigun position. Otherwise, it’s business suicide to rail against the creation of this unique AR.

Being a big fan of Krispy Kreme [but definitively against it’s recently uncovered NAZI rootlets], I wonder if Walther would come out with a special run of K.K. Edition.

    • Cam March 29, 2019, 11:01 pm

They do have an anti gun corporate policy. The manager or one store made a detective with visible badge open carry leave. They also have no carry signs posted at the store.

      • michael March 31, 2019, 1:37 pm

Not every Whataburger restaurant posts a 30.07 sign prohibiting open carry on its premises. The chain does not oppose concealed carry however.

  • Johnny March 29, 2019, 6:58 am

I’ve never even heard about Whataburger restaurants. Now that I have and understand what a bunch of dicks they are I’ll be sure to avoid them if I ever see one! Ha ha Shittyburger!
