From its domestic estate in Levy County, Florida, comes this specimen of a rare Mossberg rifle, the Premier Single Shot. Manufacturer was O.F. Mossberg & Sons of New Haven, CT. Exclusive distributor was the F.C. Taylor Fur Company of St. Louis. Type is bolt action single shot rimfire, and the Premier was Mossberg’s first such rifle. Production ran from 1928 through 1930 only. Barrel is 22 inch tapered, .705 outside diameter and the forend, and then down to .620 at the muzzle. Sights are dovetailed bead blade front, and conventional dovetailed notch type rear, with step elevator, drift adjustable only for windage. Metal construction is entirely steel, with one piece American Walnut Stock. Firing mechanism is pull knob cocker that fires by means of a spring loaded inertia firing pin, like the Stevens model 15s and Winchester 67s. Chambering is .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle interchangeably. Length of pull is 12 3/4 inches from the .175 smooth trigger face to the concave center of the factory steel butt plate. Buttstock has a 1 inch right hand cant, so this rifle will not be southpaw friendly. Weight empty is 3 pounds, 11 ounces, with center of gravity under the rear sight. This rifle was professionally refinished, some time in the 1970s by our estimate, perhaps by Rebel Gun Refinishing in Ocala. Bluing is well executed, but with residual pitting visible on the receiver, rear sight, and cocking knob, as the photos show. Trigger guard, butt plate, and bolt were not refinished, brown patina. Stock is smooth plain oil finish, with faint amounts of residual scouring. Stock shows a short hairline crack around the front trigger guard screw, and toward the rear screw, around the trigger inlet area. Finish and refinish match the rifle’s original configuration. We rate this Premier as Very Good / Refinish, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore shows faint etchiness inside, but no conspicuous pitting and sharply defined rifling for four inches at the muzzle. Chamber is smooth, bright, and clean. Cocking mechanism stands correctly. We have test fired this rifle with 10 rounds of Long Rifle ammunition, with no ejection problems. This is an attractive, serviceable specimen of the earliest Mossberg Single Shot.
