The history around this Colonial Barlow advertiser is the onset of mechanized and chemical-ized farming beginning after World War II. It comes from a local collection, custom distributed by Allis-Chalmers Equipment Company for their local dealer, Stallings Tractor Company in neighboring Hardeman County, Tennessee. That county is roughly bisected by the Hatchie River, an important divider between the West Tennessee Hills and the upper Mississippi Delta. The Western / Delta portion of the county enjoys a majority African American population, most of whose ancestors were indeed slaves. This knife’s period of manufacture, mid 1960s, came at a marked decline in labor-intensive cotton farming that affected both black and white population throughout the South, intensely and publicly so throughout much of the Delta. This is an economy version of the old Barlow pattern whose overall length closed is 3 1/2 inches, main long pull clip blade 2 7/8 inches and abbreviated slightly from being flat- or file-sharpened in its home domicile of North Mississippi Delta farmland. Note that both handle panels are nicely aged to an old ivory coloration, but the surfaces are still strong throughout, excellent lettering on the advertising panel and less aging on the reverse composite panel. It has never been sharpened or even used. We rate this little advertiser as Very Good, close to Excellent, but photos ought to suffice so that our distinguished shoppers can judge finish grade for themselves.
