Here is a worthy specimen of Beretta's answer to the demand for .40 caliber pistols in the 1990s, and the relative compactness of the Centurion variant of its Model 96, introduced in this specific configuration in 1994. We estimate that this Centurion was manufactured in 1995 or 1996, since their serial numbers range in the BER047000 to BER049000 range. This is the traditional double action configuration, where the first shot from a resting hammer position is a long smooth double action pull, and subsequent shots are single action, in the 5 pound pull range, until the operator chooses to cease firing by engaging the ambidextrous safety lever, which also serves as a decocker. The Centurion is different from the standard M-9 type 92 and 96 Berettas in that its barrel is 4 1/4 inches as opposed to the Government size 5 inch barrels. We call them Commander size, after that favorite size in Colt pistols. Weight empty is a well balanced, well centered 32 ounces. Construction consists of a light weight alloy frame with steel barrel, slide, and parts. This 96 Centurion is thoroughly traditional in that it has steel guide rod and metal magazine release, preferable to the current models with plastic parts. Trijicon 3-dot night sights still show 60 to 70 percent luminosity, quite strong and a testament to Trijicon quality, by our dark room estimate. Capacity is 11 + 1 rounds, and the magazines are all original Italian Made 11 rounders, LE Marked. This 96 has normal holster wear, and we rate it as Very Good, since we estimate that 80 percent of its original finish is intact. Photos should suffice, however, for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. This pistol has served all of us, really, during its 15 some odd year career with the officers of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, front line guardians of the Chesapeake.
