This is a very handy percussion rifle to hunt with in the deer woods or on trail walks due to its size and weight (8LBS). The .50 caliber Hall Sharon slow twist, 30 inch barrel is bright, smooth and shiny and shoots straight. It also features a custom copper based front sight with a German silver blade which is very traditional along with a very nice rear sight not from Sharon. These normally came with a very chunky steel front and rear sights. Whoever built this rifle knew what they were doing as the parts are nicely fitted, screws are "clocked" and there are some very nice touches especially around the lock panels on top. The accuracy is aided by the very nice aftermarket double set adjustable triggers installed on this kit build, something very unique amongst trade rifles. It fires either set or unset and the length of pull is 14." Bluing on metal parts is thinning on the high spots as it was probably lightly cold blued. It isn't a very durable finish but the good news is its easy to do again if you so desire. I had planned on draw filing the barrel and rust browning all the metal parts but never got around to it. Overall it has a nice patina to the barrel and steel parts but I would personally like it rust browned or rust blued. Sorry for rambling I just love these things. For custom or aftermarket extras on this rifle you have the front and rear sights, toe plate, double set triggers and side plate/screw escutcheon. I have won many matches and dropped many game with my Sharon rifles and once this goes I will be down to my last one which was my first. I still have a kit and that is the only reason I am willing to part with this one. I will make the kit long the lines of this one with the satisfaction of doing it all myself. This one also has a beautiful hard maple stock with lots of figure in it and just a few handling marks. Wood of this grade with such nice figure and graceful lines is not often seen on these kit builds. Here is your chance to score a nice one just in time for hunting season! One of my prized possessions a GORGEOUS tiger stripped curly maple half stock Hawken with a custom 7 groove barrel stamped HE RESLEY, 35 1/2" to front of breech, 36 1/4 to back of hooked breech, LOP is 14", overall length is 53 1/2". This barrel was rifled by the famous judge himself. I purchased it probably 15-20 years ago in its almost like new condition. I never hunted or even fired it. Being it has an odd numbered grooved bore I am saying its .50 cal because thats the best I can do with my micrometer. Best bet is to slug the bore to get a true bore size, might be a .51 etc. The Judge is well known for his famously accurate barrels, do a google search or search this forum for more info on him. Hate to sell but need to balance the budget here at home unlike the folks in DC. I have a few articles from NMLRA on the Judge that will go with the rifle. Thanks for looking.
