Charter Arms debuted its Undercover series in 1964, and we began selling them shortly thereafter. It was always competitive with Smith & Wesson’s Chief’s Special Revolvers, but with the Stainless Undercover in the mid 1980s, got even more so. Here is recent production Undercover in Stainless Steel and Alloy. It comes to us from a New England collection. Manufacturer was Charter Arms of Shelton CT, and so marked. From its 73000 range Shelton number, it was manufactured in 2007. Type is traditional double and single action pocket revolver with transfer bar internal safety device. Construction is stainless steel barrel, cylinder, yoke, pin, hammer, trigger, main frame and steel internal parts combined with a coated alloy grip frame. Caliber is .38 Smith & Wesson Special, with a 5 shot swingout cylinder. Barrel is one piece 2 inch eight groove 1:18 rifling, full lug. Sights are barrel integral serrated blade front, with frame integral fixed notch rear. Trigger is .300 smooth face combat, with .310 short serrated spur hammer. Grip panels are factory finger groove combat rubber. Weight empty is 18 ounces, with center of gravity at the cylinder stop. Surface detractions on this Undercover are only moderate, principally small amounts of scouring and pecking on the right side of the muzzle and upper right frame edge. We rate this Charter as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Hammer travels an additional 10 degrees on all five positions on double action after the cylinder times. There is no lateral play to the cylinder with the trigger fully depressed. Double Action trigger pull is 12 pound vicinity, with a 4 3/4 pound original single action trigger pull that has moderate felt creep and overtravel. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is minimal, only a faint etchy line with no depth. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures a perfect .006. We estimate this revolver has been fired fewer than 100 times. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright and clean. Similar revolvers from Taurus and Smith & Wesson command prices upwards of $500 apiece. We’re offering the 2007 Charter .38 Undercover Stainless in the photos, however, for only $ 269.00.
