This rifle’s exclusive owner said it was too pretty to shoot, and traded it to us for a .38 Smith & Wesson Airweight. Henry Repeating Arms rifles are direct descendants of the collectable Ithacas 49 and 72 series rifles. The Henry beats its Marlin 39A competitor (that is allegedly still in production) on fit, finish, smoothness, and price; but of course the 39A wins on accuracy. Marlins will generally hold 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards, with the Henrys closer to 3 inches. Manufacturer is Henry Repeating Arms of Bayonne, NJ, and barrel is so marked. From this one’s factory test document, it was manufactured in November of 2013. Construction is steel barrel, trigger, hammer, lever, outer magazine tube, and internal parts, with brasslite alloy receiver, barrel band, buttplate, and inner mag tube. Stock and forend are satin finish American Walnut. Barrel is 20 inch Octagonal, 1/4 inch across the flats, with six groove right hand 1:16 rifling. Sights are dovetailed brass tipped blade front, with step elevator buckhorn style rear. All Henry .22 Receivers are grooved for 3/8 inch Weaver type .22 scope rings. Chambering is .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle interchangeably. Magazine holds 16 rounds of Long Rifle, or 21 rounds of .22 Short. Trigger is .280 serrated face, with .350 serrated spur hammer. This specimen’s trigger pulled at a crisp 4 1/4 pounds with negligible felt creep. Hammer is 3 position, and the Henry does not have a manually operated safety or a lever safety. Buttstock length of pull measures 14 1/4 inches from the trigger face to the upper buttplate, and the stock has a 3/4 inch right hand cant, not southpaw friendly. Weight empty is 6 3/4 pounds, with center of gravity at the ejection port. This rifle is in its original box with factory protective paper, instruction manual, warning brochure, receiver cloth cover, and inspection certificate dated from late 2013. Surface detractions are negligible, perhaps very faint operation whitening on the bolt and hammer edge only. We rate it as Near Mint in Box, 98 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore and mechanism are bright and clean, and we estimate it has been fired fewer than 50 times. Replacement pricing on an H004 Golden Boy in our area is over $500.
