From its N799000 range serial number, and from similarly numbered new 1400s we had that same year, this Winchester model 1400 Mark II was manufactured in 1978 or 1979. It comes to us from its original owner, a Man of the Cloth. Manufacturer was Olin-owned Winchester Repeating Arms of New Haven, CT. Type is gas operated semi-automatic shotgun. Construction is blue steel barrel and magazine tube, white steel bolt, and internal parts all in a matching glossy black anodized lightweight alloy receiver. Barrel is 28 inches long, with 13 port Ventilated Rib that measures .290 high at the barrel lug. Rib is .385 wide, with stainless bead sight. Choke system is Winchester Winchoke®, interchangeable with Mossberg Accu-Choke and old style Browning Invectors. Included tube is a .694 muzzle Full, NOT for use with steel shot. Buttstock and forend are American Walnut with diamond pattern pressed checkering on all three forend faces, and on the pistol grip area of the buttstock. Grip cap is blued steel, and buttplate is Winchester Repeating Arms factory black polymer. Length of pull is 13 7/8 inches from the .250 smooth steel trigger face to the end of the butt plate; standard 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inch drop and 1 inch right hand cant. The walnut is attractive semi-gloss finish with light and dark contrast figure to it. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch shells only, and capacity is 2 + 1 shells fully loaded, no need for a 3 shot adapter or plug. Safety is forward of the trigger, right hand shooter. Weight empty is 7 pounds, 8 1/2 ounces, with center of gravity at the breech face. Surface detractions on this 1400 Mark II are minimal to moderate, principally some contact scouring on the buttstock and occasional freckling on the blued barrel and white bolt. We rate it as a strong Very Good, 80 to 85 percent by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, gas ports, and mechanism are all bright and clean. From the moderate shell contact wear on its carrier or floorplate, we estimate this 1400 has been fired fewer than 1000 rounds.
