According to its AZC serial number prefix, this .357 Military & Police Heavy Barrel Stainless, numbered model 65-3 was manufactured in 1988, and issued in the opening year at Grafton Correctional Institute for duty with Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections officers there. It bears ODRC markings GCI 5 on its side plate and the numeral 5 stamped on the forward left side of the frame. The .312 smooth faced combat trigger and matching .265 serrated spur hammer nose type hammer are both classic Satin Stainless finish. Surface detractions are only moderate, principally edge scouring. Grips are near mint factory walnut Magna service type. We rate this revolver as Very Good, since we estimate that 70 to 80 percent of its finish is free of detractions; but photos should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the underside of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, only a faint thin streak with no depth that traverses about half of the width of the top strap. This revolver has not had many magnum loads fired through it. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal, less than 1/2 mm total movement by our estimate; both with the trigger relaxed and with it fully depressed. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional five to ten degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels fully 25 to 30 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp original 3 1/8 pounds. Bore and cylinder chambers are bright, clean, and excellent. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures a perfect .006. This is a very well constructed, eminently serviceable Smith & Wesson Magnum.
