Description: Smith & Wesson serialization is, to say the least, somewhat enigmatic. Supica's and Nahas's Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson admit that their best guess is that serialization of the .38 Bodyguard Stainless, numbered model 649, began with AFN prefix in 1985. This one's prefix is ANS, so it was likely manufactured in 1986. This fully traditional, no suffix variant of the Bodyguard Stainless is identical to the classic blue steel bodyguard except for being a stainless. Construction is entirely steel, with stainless barrel, frame, and cylinder with steel internal parts and chrome plated steel trigger and hammer. This 649 is classic short J frame. Caliber is .38 Smith & Wesson Special, with 5 shot cylinder capacity. Its frame's extended area that surrounds the hammer, gives sufficient added strength that our local owners of these pre-Magnum-J frames have experienced no problems using +P ammunition in them. Since this specimen's top strap underside exhibits only negligible blast effect, we do not believe any +P rounds have been fired in it anyway; probable carry load was Federal non-plus-P Nyclad 125 grain ammunition. Surface detractions are only moderate, edge scouring and side plate scouring here and there; and we estimate that less than 20 percent of its entire surface is affected. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Specs are: traditional double- and single-action revolver, 2 inch barrel; 1/10 inch serrated ramp blade front sight with fixed notch rear sight; .312 Satin Chrome plated steel Trigger; matching .240 Serrated Satin Finish Shrouded Hammer; five shot capacity with internal transfer hammer block safety mechanism; and period correct Pachmayr SJ/CP grips with the Lion logo. Note that the yoke screw and its adjacent area show moderate stress from this revolver's annual servicing by S&W factory-trained Department Armorers. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright and clean. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent. On double action, the hammer travels an additional 5 degrees on all five positions after the cylinder times into place. Single action trigger pull measures a crisp original 3 1/2 pounds, and the hammer travels an additional 20 to 25 degrees on all five after the cylinder times. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal with the trigger relaxed; with the trigger fully depressed there is no lateral movement whatsoever. Don't let your buddies use your account. Registered user must be the buyer, with his or her own money. Buying firearms and related items for other people can result in felony charges. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
GA Pay buyers are NOT charged until we confirm we have the item and are ready to ship it. The same thing is true for phone-in, fax-in, and mail-in payments. In this respect, and in several others, Guns America outshines all its competitors. This is the best firearms website there is, hands down.
