In a day where the assumption among handgun shoppers is the smaller the better, here is a specimen of one the easiest handling, least dangerous, most accurate handguns ever designed or made. From President Reagan's Re-election Year comes this thoroughly traditional .38 Military and Police Stainless, the Model 64, third engineering change. Serial number prefix is AFE, 1984 production. Metal surfaces exhibit holster buffing, contact scouring, and some polishing. Matte finish atop frame and barrel has been buffed but is still strong. There are perhaps two dozen tiny pecks here and there along the sides of the barrel, left side of frame, and mostly on the side plate. Yoke screw shows minimal stress from annual armorer servicing. Note that there is etchiness to the right side of frame under the grip, and perhaps a square inch of pitting on the left side under the grip. Finishwise, we rate this 64 as Very Good, 75 to 80 percent of its original finish intact. Photos, however, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. Note the classic, highly desirable satin stainless hammer and serrated trigger, and their excellent condition. Grips are new replacement Pachmayr SK/L, but that model Pachmayr was the top seller at the time, only with no lion logos yet. This is actually just as good as, and probably rarer than, the premium priced 64-3 Bangor Punta variants from earlier years that had pinned barrels. This 64-3 is Excellent mechanically. Double action trigger pull is exceptionally smooth and consistent, probably less than 10 pounds on double action, and the hammer travels 5 to 10 degrees after the cylinder times on all six positions in double action. On single action, the hammer travels an additional 20 degrees on all six after the cylinder times into place. Single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 5/8 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal, less than 1mm total movement by our estimate, with the trigger relaxed. There is no movement whatsoever with the trigger pulled all the way. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, a faint shallow crease with no significant depth that traverses about 1/3 the width of the top strap. This revolver has had very few if any +P rounds fired in it. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .006. This 25 year old service revolver has been well maintained and sparingly used during its career, and it is eminently serviceable for civilian or security use.
