Description: Am offering this day one Colt 1851 Navy Revolver serial number 93,506, manufactured in the year 1860.

This old Navy Colt just came out of the woodwork right out of the hands of a of a family that had lived on the same farm property in Georgia for more than three generations. In the last decade, the present owners, the great grandchildren of Major Arthur Cobb, had fallen on hard times and were forced to sell the family property, including their ancestors sword, saddle, carbine, (model Smith, serial number 21334) and revolver, (model Colt serial number 93,506).

During the bidding process, I was able to bid on and won the Colt Revolver serial number 93,506, listed above. To accurately describe this special revolver, let me begin by stating that Its a standard 4th model with large brass trigger guard, .36 Caliber, 7 1/2 in. octagon barrel and Hartford Barrel Address. 100% all matching numbers throughout including wedge and arbor pin. Its serial number falls within the 90,000+ serial range, established as those Southern-bound purchases of Colt 1851 Navy's in the months in the very early part of 1860, when tensions between the north and south, Democrat and a Republican, were at their highest. War talk between the various factions had been going on ever since The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´. With the passage of this act, Missouri pro-slavery border ruffians began to raid all the small towns and hamlets deep within Kansas, to force Kansas residents to vote for slavery. From 1854 through 1865 this was known as "Bleeding Kansas" because of all of the border wars.

You wonder what does these early border conflicts have to do with the Hartford Addressed Colts! Well over the years I have owned 12 of these addressed units of various dates that span November, 1857 through December 1860. It is the belief of this writer that the majority of these Hartford Addressed units were shipped to southern customers i.e. Colt Allies. In point of fact the unit that I have dated 1857 was part of a shipment of 300 units shipped to Simmons Hardware, Saint Louis.

This writer believes that these Hartford addressed Colts were never recorded in the serial number records, kept by the Colt Company. Beginning with serial numbers 63,000, previously thought to be the Late 1850's and ending with serial number 100,000, were actually produced in mid 1860 and ending in early 1861. These early shipments by Colt to southern buyers, of Hartford addressed revolvers, were picked up by some of the heavily abolitionist newspapers of the north severely criticizing Samuel Colt for these shipments. Some went so far as to actually accuse him in print as a southern sympathizer. In my research of the actions of the Colt Patent Firearms Company, one can easily see that Sam Colt was just a business man trying to capitalize on this upcoming war. He certainly wouldn’t be the first or the last businessman to do this!
