This Remington 40X SN 25653B was manufactured circa 1968, it has a 28” heavyweight tapered barrel and is chambered for .22 Long Rifle. It is a single fire weapon renowned for its accuracy and is a notable varmint or target gun. The barrel exhibits 99% factory bluing with a mirror bore, the receiver is in similar excellent shape, the barrel and action are tapped for your choice of sights. The action is marked U.S. 22 LONG RIFLE, they were used as training rifles and by college ROTC units, military academies and competitive shooting teams from the various services. The Walnut stock features an underside rail and a flat profile, ideal for bench rest shooting. The trigger is adjustable for travel and on this example is set for 2.8lb. The bolt has twin extractors and two locking lugs, the bolt runs smoothly. As the famous rifleman and writer Townsend Whelen observed “only accurate rifles are interesting”, the Remington 40X rifles are considered outstanding target guns, their quality surpasses many custom-built rifles which typically cost more, this solidly built example is a great and economical way to get started on the road to true accuracy, overall, very “interesting”.
