We are offering for sale a very unique W.T. HOWELL & CO. smoothbore percussion rifle. This rifle, dating between 1834 and 1847 is very nice and would make an excellent display piece. This rifle shows very nice patina.
35” octagonal barrel is very good with a brown patina. Front blade sight and rear fixed sight present. Smoothbore appears to be very good with little wear. Barrel breach shows signs of engraving that carry into the sideplate. Sideplate marked “W.T. HOWELL & CO.” Hammer functions flawlessly. Ramrod present and appearing original. Stock shows some general wear as well as a crack through the neck area. Crack has been closed and “pinned” with a period screw; This could be repaired by any experienced gunsmith. Left side of stock has cheek rest; Right side of stock shows a beautifully inlayed brass patch box. Trigger guard, butt plate and other parts of this rifle are brass and display brilliantly.
This rifle is English made and was imported into the United States before HOWELL put his name on it.
