From its N450000 range serial number, and from similarly numbered new 1400s we had that same year, this Winchester model 1400 Skeet was manufactured in 1969. It comes to us from the collection of its exclusive owner, a financial officer who likely bought it new from us. Manufacturer was Olin-owned Winchester Repeating Arms of New Haven, CT. Type is gas operated semi-automatic shotgun. Construction is blue steel barrel and magazine tube, white steel bolt, and internal parts all in a matching glossy black anodized lightweight alloy receiver. Barrel is 26 inches long, with 13 port Ventilated Rib that measures .290 high at the barrel lug. Rib is .385 wide, with red polymer backed bead front sight and stainless middle bead. Choke is .728 muzzle Skeet, with barrel wall thickness of .067 at the muzzle. Buttstock and forend are select American Walnut with heraldic tournament pattern press checkering on all three forend faces, and on the pistol grip area of the buttstock. Grip cap is blued steel, and buttplate is factory black polymer. Length of pull is 14 inches from the trigger face to the end of the butt plate; standard 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inch drop and 1 inch right hand cant. The walnut is very well figured, with plenty of figure, including burl, birdseyes and sunburst. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch shells only, and capacity is 2 + 1 shells. Weight empty is 7 pounds, 8 1/2 ounces, with center of gravity at the breech face. Surface detractions on this 1400 Skeet Gun are minimal to negligible. We only detect a half dozen tiny white spots on the edge of the rib, and on the rib step on top of the receiver. Buttstock and forend have faint amounts of finish deficiencies that are probably original to the shotgun, it being a satin finish on the wood anyway. When we broke this gun apart to clean it, the bolt collar and jeweled surface of the bolt still had some of its original grease, and the shell carrier or floorplate shows no streaking whatsoever. If this shotgun has been fired at all, it was fewer than 25 times. Whatever one’s opinion is of the 1400 series Winchesters, there are plenty of them still in the field, and this specimen is a beautiful shotgun. We’re offering it for only $ 489.00.
