Description:
Springfield Armory M1 Garand, .30-06, serial number 54264xx, manufactured 1955. Barrel is new Criterion, stock is new, other major components are marked Springfield, all are detailed below and shown in pictures. No import marks.
The receiver on this Garand was from a drill rifle, but has been repaired. Please read our notes regarding the receiver below. This rifle is offered as an excellent shooter rather than a pristine collector’s item.
The gun shoots great. We test fired it at 100 yards, and it cycled through a full eight round clip with no issues, ejecting the clip at the end. You can watch a video of our test firing at our YouTube channel, Fernwood Armory TV.
The gun has been disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. Parts were clean for photos, coated with oil and greased where appropriate when reassembled.
Part Details:
-Receiver: marked “F 6528291” on leg, heat lot A49. The receiver is in excellent condition, no pitting. This receiver is from a drill rifle: some rifles were disabled for use as ceremonial or parade rifles. Usually, the barrels were plugged, gas cylinders and bolts were destroyed by welding, and the plugged barrel was welded to the receiver. Some receivers were ruined by welding up the op rod track and other areas. This receiver had only a small weld to the barrel on the underside, which has been squared off. The weld material is typically stainless steel, which cannot be parkerized. This receiver was refinished with black nitride, which colors stainless black the same as regular steel.

-Op rod: marked “D35382 SA”, no pitting, new parkerizing, looks like new. Op rod and bolt cycle freely by tilting when everything is assembled except main spring and hammer (Garands with binding or rubbing op rods tend to have feeding and/or ejecting problems).
-Op rod catch: late type, unmarked
-Bullet guide: milled WWII type
-Follower: late type, unmarked
-Follower arm: no bevel, has hammer forge mark “5S2”
-Follower rod: long fork, riveted
-Bolt: new old stock, marked “6528287-SA B-2-0”
-Firing pin: half round, no chrome tip, unmarked
-Extractor: blued, unmarked
-Elevation knob: marked “NHC”
-Windage knob: marked “DRC”
-Rear sight base: late type, unmarked
-Rear sight cover: late type with ribs
-Rear sight aperture: HRA/SA type, double track, unmarked
-Trigger housing: marked “6528290-SA”. Small pad, cloverleaf hole, exc condition, no pitting, some finish wear
-Trigger guard: milled WWII type, unmarked, probably SA
-Trigger: late type, no extra hole, unmarked
-Hammer: marked “SA D5546008”
-Trigger spring plunger: with wings
-Safety: round top, marked “D46015-9SA”
-Gas cylinder: wide sight platform, flat on top of rear ring, unmarked, probably SA. Gas cylinder group finish is excellent. The gas cylinder/barrel fit has been tightened to maximize accuracy.
-Front sight: 0.64 wide, unmarked
-Gas cylinder lock: round bevel front type
-Gas cylinder screw: cross slot, poppet valve type, marked “P” hexagon
-Stock and handguards: new, walnut, new condition
-Stock and handguard metal: new
