Description: If you are viewing this listing, then you are already familiar with the history and the rarity of these models. This is truly a very nice 1st model, rated at least VG+. Truly remarkable considering the low numbers of these first variants that were produced, and then an even lower number that actually survived in somewhat decent condition having undergone cavalry issue during the Indian Wars, and then the rigors of frontier use. Most of these were later sold off as surplus only to have their barrels cut down, undergo refinishing with many of their numbered parts intermingled with others, and then commercially sold to the frontier market. It is then truly a rarity to find one that is as decent as this one. All numbers match, including the grip panels. The grips have never been messed with and still display the outline of the inspector’s cartouche on the left panel. The wood has only very minimal shrink and loss around the toe areas. There are minimal handling marks on the wood and absolutely no evidence of repairs. The wood retains the original oil finish. All metal stampings and letterings are sharp and very legible. Some of the screws appear untouched, while some show some use, but nonetheless all are in very serviceable condition. All other numbers match and all inspector markings are present. The majority of the original blue finish has flaked off over the years, rather than worn off. The remaining pronounced finish is mottled bluish gray flakes all over. There is solid bluing not only in the protected recesses, but in other areas that are not so protected, especially under the frame and around the trigger guard area. The gun is as tight as a watch with no play or wiggle. Excellent mechanics. Springs are nice and tight too. The lands and grooves are pronounced with light frosting and some light frosting throughout; the bore being at least a 7 on a 10 scale and should clean up much better. This is a very nice piece that undoubtedly saw frontier service use, but was never abused; not a hot-house rose that was kept in some officer's garrison desk drawer. Any serious Smith collector or collector of western memorabilia would be proud to have this as part of their collection.
