Universal Firearms in Hialeah, Florida, enjoyed access to plentiful GI Parts for the venerable .30 Carbine, and manufactured for almost 40 years, using a mixture of their own proprietary parts with Government Surplus Parts. Production began in the early 1950s, and fizzled in the mid 1980s when a brief continuance developed with Iver Johnson company. This Universal .30 caliber M-1 Commercial Carbine’s serial number is 335000 range, very close to its mates that we sold brand new in 1975 and 1976. It comes to us from its civilian collector who bought it from its original owner in Northeast Mississippi. It has the standard 18 inch barrel, with band GI type front sight and windage and elevation aperture, or peep, rear sight. Buttstock is original production dark stained hardwood with blue steel buttplate, and with blue steel perforated barrel shield above the forend area of the stock. In a departure from the GI versions, this Universal carbine never had a bayonet lug. Overall length is 35 5/8 inches, with 13 inch length of pull buttstock. Weight empty is only 6 pounds, 4 ounces, even with a 30 shot magazine in battery. Magazines are all KCI Korean military, new and unissued. Surface detractions on this specimen are minimal, principally edge whitening to the lightweight alloy trigger group, only a few faint occasional scours on the stock, and operation whitening on the bolt surface. We rate this Universal Carbine as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent, 85 to 90 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean.
