The lock is dated 1865 and the breech block 1866 - this is correct for this model. This rifle was part of the 2nd Allin conversion of rifles from 1861 rifled muskets sitting US arsenals to breechloading rifles. It's a pretty interesting story. This rifle was modified from its original configuration over the years. Both the stock and barrel were shortened in what I have to assume was an attempt to "sporterize" the rifle into a carbine; no cartouches are visible. The extractor also does not seem to be working correctly. You will also note surface pitting on the receiver and block. The rifling is present, but not sharp. I've owned the gun for about 1/2 my life. I bought it because it's a neat old gun with an interesting story. I've fired about 10 rounds through it, and it looks cool on the wall. It's no museum piece, but if you like history and old machinery you might understand the appeal. This weapon does not require an FFL due to the age. And considering the age it would be prudent to have it inspected by a competant gunsmith before firing.
