Here is a very attractive, eminently serviceable and even collectable Smith & Wesson Pistol, an all stainless 4006 with Adjustable Sights chambered in .40 S&W caliber. From this specimen’s VJD serial number prefix, it was probably manufactured in 1995 or 1996. Smith & Wesson metal frame auto serialization is enigmatic for dating purposes. It spent its career protecting our fellow Americans with the distinguished Rangers of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, attest the well executed State Parks logo on the right side of the slide, and matching department numbers on the right side of the barrel, slide, and frame. Buyers and transfer dealers should not confuse the California numbers with the serial number. Serial numbers are always on the left side of the frame above the trigger on Smith & Wesson metal frame automatics. This one was issued, per State specifications, in traditional double and single action, only with a spurless hammer to prevent an officer from entering a stressful situation with the hammer back on single action. First shot is a long double action pull, and then subsequent shots are short pull single action until the operator engages the ambidextrous safety / decocker, which puts the car in park. Spurred hammers are available direct from Smith & Wesson at $41 apiece. Construction is stainless steel frame, slide, barrel and parts, with black anodized .260 spurless hammer, and .305 smooth face combat trigger. Grips are original factory Zytel polymer. We are offering this pistol with a total of 2 factory magazines, all of them Smith & Wesson blue follower stainless Accu-Guide 11 rounders, marked Restricted Law Enforcement because they were manufactured during the Federal Ban Period, with its 10 round magazine limit for civilians. Barrel is 4 inch stainless; and weight empty is 39 ounces with the center of gravity at the trigger. The star of the show on this 4006 is its dovetailed, black anodized white dot front sight and well protected windage and elevation adjustable rear sights. This is a well preserved pistol. Surface detractions are minimal, only faint amounts of holster contact buffing on the slide and frame edges, and surface contact buffing and faint scouring on the right side of the one piece grip. We rate it as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent, 85 to 90 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Excellent mechanically; Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Factory sku was 102940 for this configuration, but many of this one’s mates had 103935 on their boxes, a number that is not even listed in the Standard Catalog.
