Description: For sale is one U.S. Model of 1917 .30-06 bolt-action Enfield-patern rifle manufactured by Remington Arms. While sporterized, the rifle is largely intact. The original stock, which has been cut on the fore end and added to with a functional pistol grip and cheekpiece, is marked S S.S.A and "RA-P". The reciever, marked "U.S. Model of 1917, Remington" serial number 221XXX, indicates it left the factory in May 1918, and likely was shipped to Europe to fight. The original ladder sight has been removed in lieu of a two-aperture flip peep sight. The front sight, with miliatry wings, appears to have been unmodified. The military parkerized finish is in good condition, and the rifle shows no rust or abnormal wear. The finish is strong except as typical on high spots and edges, and on the working areas of the action. The buttstock shows nice figure that matches the solid, burly character of the rifle.

The action, with controlled-round feed, claw extractor, and fixed ejector, has similar features to the Mauser pattern rifles and all it's successful variants and offspring. The action is rugged and has been test fired and functions well. The springs appear strong, the safety functions, and the bolt and internal magazine operate smoothly. The rifle feeds, fires, and ejects flawlessly.

Research indicates the rifle is a WWII arsenal rebuild with a bright, sharp 2-groove barrel marked "JA" for Johnson Automatic, known for accuracy. Johnson Automatic was also the manufacturer of the M1941 Johnson Light Machine Gun, a model used exclusively by the U.S. Marine Corps in WWII. The reciever is marked Remington, the bolt release and sling swivels marked "E" for Eddystone, and the bolt handle marked "W" for Winchester, with accompanying flaming bomb and eagle markings. The bolt handle is also marked "NS", indicating the bolt is made of nickel steel, a Winchester exclusive. The fact it was rebarrelled, and produced well prior to Armistice Day, indicates it is likely the rifle saw combat in WWI and it's markings and condition indicate it was rebuilt in WWII but likely not used.

This rugged, functional rifle could be restored to U.S. military trim with a vintage stock and ladder sight, or used as-is as a durable, effective big game rifle making major style points at hunting camp or in the fall woods. How many hunters can claim their rifles fought "the Hun" in the "War to End All Wars" or possibly the Nazi menace in "The Big One"?
