No. 1 Rolling Block buffalo rifle. This is in the very rare and extremely desirable caliber of 50-70 Gov't; the most desirable caliber of the Rem No. 1’s. It also has the equally sought-after feature of a set-trigger. The 50-70s are extremely rare in this model and when encountered, are usually in less than desirable shape. The Rem No. 1's were only second to the Sharps rifles in popularity with the professional frontier buffalo hunters. It was this particular model of No 1 in this very caliber of 50-70 Gov't that was George Custer's favorite hunting arm, and it was likely the rifle taken with him on the campaign into the Little Big Horn. This is an early manufacture with the last patent date of 1873, not the later patent date variant of 1875. The overall condition is near fine. It is a museum quality piece. In fact, this was a museum piece at one time as evidenced by a tiny painted museum catalog inventory number on the upper left corner of the stock. This can be removed, however, it only serves to attest to the worthiness of its condition. This has a 30” non-tapered octagonal barrel that is 1” across from flat to flat. All lettering and numbers are sharp and clear and the placed serial numbers match. All metal has turned to nice smooth mottled brown with light handling marks. The wood has a moderate amount of handling marks; the overall condition of metal and wood suggests frontier usage, but was very well care for. The bore is very good with strong lands and grooves with very light frosting; at least an 8 on a 10 scale and should clean up better. It is doubtful that this was some hot house rose that was tucked away in some back east gun cabinet or closet. There is evidence of slight damage and frontier repair to the stock, most likely from a horse roll-over or having been caught in the scabbard next to the horse’s neck by a tree branch. It is a slight approximate 3” long crack on the right wrist from the frame that fades and was filled-in, probably with pitch that is a period repair. This is very typical and is most often encountered on frontier used Sharps and a variety of other frontier scabbard used rifles; rifles moreso than carbines. There is also an approximate 2” long hairline crack on the left side of the wrist running starting from the bottom tang that fades out. The stock is nevertheless stable and solid as a rock. The mechanics are excellent, tight, with very strong spring tensions. The set-trigger works perfectly. This is an opportunity to own a very rare and most desirable early old west and plains variant Mod No. 1. U.S. Postal Money Orders or Cashier's Checks from major nation-wide banks.
