The US Rifle .30 Cal M1, designed by John Garand of the US Springfield Armory in the early 1930's, is arguably the single most significant small arms development of the 20th Century. Adopted by the US Army in 1936, the M1 was the first semi-automatic main battle rifle fielded by any armed force, and served as the US military's main infantry weapon through WWII and Korea until being phased out in the late 1950's. The rifle's accuracy, ruggedness, and firepower far outclassed any of the bolt action rifles fielded by friend or foe in WWII. This rifle is from Springfield Armory's mid-WWII production in December, 1943, when the Armory turned about 100K units. WWII-vintage rifles in good shape, like this one, are prized because of their historical connection to the US role in that great war.

With the exception of the stainless steel gas tube, all metalwork bears a durable mil spec parkerized (phosphate-based matte gray) finish, set in a military dark-walnut stock with the designation “C/S 111” in old stencil on the right. Over the past 60-odd years, most M1 rifles have been arsenal reconditioned at least once. This rifle is no exception. The receiver markings (“2291xxx” serial number) indicate a date of manufacture in one of Springfield's big WWII production blocks in Dec, 1943 (serial numbers 2,204,431--2,305,849). The barrel-group date (“SA 12 51”) indicates that the rifle was arsenal-reconditioned with a new barrel at least once after 1951. Note: This gun is over 60 years old . You should have it checked by a competent gunsmith before you shoot it. The desert-tan hard case is foam lined and bears the CMP logo.

Condition of this gun is “as-received” from the CMP, who, after inspecting it, rated the rifle as “Service Grade” with muzzle gauge and throat erosion reading 1+ and 3, respectively. Equivalent NRA grade would be (Modern) Very Good. Although in need of a deep cleaning to remove stubborn copper fouling and old cosmoline in the groove shoulders, the bore is bright and not pitted. The rifling is bold and well-defined. The breech face, action, and follower linkages are in excellent condition and clean although there is still some remnant grease deep in the action innards. The chamber shows no pitting but is dull and slightly stained. Except for the barrel, gas tube, butt plate, swivels, and hand guard hardware, external metal finish is about 93%, with the coating worn off most receiver sharp edges and angles, and from the bearing surfaces at the front of the bolt and under the operating rod. Otherwise, finish on the flats and contours of the receiver is largely intact although slightly thinned and mottled. Exposed barrel finish is deeper and better preserved, about 98% except at the tip of the muzzle. The delicate original finish on the gas tube, which is stainless and not parkerized, has partially worn off (as it usually does–about 60% left). The sling and stacking-swivel fittings are lightly freckled with little finish, and the hand-guard bands and clips are tarnished. The butt plate has almost no finish, the toe is slightly scuffed, and their is light rust-staining in the checkering. Overall stock condition is Good. The wood is well-oiled and dark from use and repeated military oil treatments. It shows a number of the dings and tool marks expected on a surplus military arm of this age, particularly on the left side of the receiver. Although it has “character”, the wood shows no splits or cracks. The CMP hard case is Factory New.
