According to the book “Remington .22 Rimfire Rifles” by John Gyde and Roy Marcot, known serial numbers begin at 168,525, which if true, would put the rifle above near the beginning of the production run. Like all Remington rolling blocks, it has seen its fair share of usage. A rubber spacer was placed between the two takedown sections to keep the rifle tight, which it does. Mechanically, the gun is sound in its hammer and breech block. There is a gap between the bottom of the receiver and the stock. The stock maker took too much off the bottom portion of the stock during the manufacturing process of the rifle. On a rifle this small, and with such a low-recoiling cartridge, this gap should not present any problem. The bore was apparently never cleaned and is worn, but there is still visible rifling. It should still shoot decently, but I would recommend the rifle more as a collector piece than anything. The bluing has worn over time in some spots, especially on the top of the tang. Why Remington located their name brand there knowing that human hands would wear it off through holding the rifle is anyone’s guess. This rifle is still in better condition than many of the Rolling Blocks I have seen. Some have no rifling left in the bore at all and their stocks are practically splinters. It is recommended that a leather mallet be used on the takedown lever during disassembly, as the lever is tight. The barrel is 22.5 inches in length. This rifle would be a nice collector piece.
