Introduced in 1891 and designed by Russian artillery captain Sergei Mosin, the “???????????? ????????” (Three line rifle) Mosin Nagant series of rifle have become one of the most mass produced and prolific arms ever created. Initially designed to replace the Imperial Russians aging arsenal of Berdan single shot rifles, the Model 1891 rifles 70+ year production yielded one of the most widely used and distributed combat arm. With over 37 million produced (all variants), the Mosin served on many fronts including the Russo Japanese War, World War One, the Russian Revolution, The Spanish Civil War, The Winter War, World War Two, the Continuation War, The Korean War, The Vietnam War and are commonly seen today in current conflicts worldwide including the middle east.

Soon after the implementation of the M1891 rifle, it became apparent that the infantry (Pekhotnaya) model of the Mosin was too long for mounted troops. Russia’s answer to this was the M1891 Dragoon rifle. Essentially an M1891 with a shorter barrel and updated upper hand guard, the Dragoon rifle proved to be a valuable battlefield asset, as was displayed by its long run production and widespread issue.

This particular rifle was manufactured at the Soviet state arsenal Izhevsk in 1927 and was given to the Spanish Republican forces during the 1930’s as aid to fight the Fascist backed Franco Nationalist’s. The Spanish Civil War (17 July 1936 – 1st April 1939) saw extensive fighting and large numbers of foreign volunteers. The Civil war eventually led to the dissolution of the Second Spanish Republic and the instillation of a Fascist Spain led by Dictator Francisco Franco. The Spanish Civil War also saw the Canadian contingent of volunteers formed under the “Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion” fight alongside the Soviet backed Republican forces.

This rifle is in very good condition. There is a small piece of wood missing at the end of the stock. ALL THE NUMBERS MATCH. Hex reciever, crisp, clear stamping. Wood shows handling marks. As far as I can tell these numbers are not force stamped and has not been rearsenaled. Still has cosmoline throughout. A front hood was added to sight. No major problems with wood except for what was mentioned earlier. After alot of research it looks to be quite rarer than other Mosin-nagants. On a scale of 1 to 10 it shows an 8. I'm not an expert in Mosin-nagant by any means but did plenty of research.
