Barrel London marked, 42 inch , aprox .75 cal. / 12 bore. of elaborate design. Octagon at breach, doubling to 16 facets at forearm, then accent divider & round profile to muzzle. Floral engraving, gold-wash and nickel-silver (?) inlay at breach & top tang. Small disc in buttstock, reads " M I ". Steel Buttplate marked " N C 8 3 ". Buttstock marked " 8 3 " on left. Small diamond proof mark w ' 1 ' inside on lock plate. Markings may denote Civil War military service : North & South alike imported many such surplus arms from europe before domestic mfr's could catch up with demand. Solid, handsome piece.
