This is a nicely preserved specimen of the entire shift to round butt on Smith & Wesson K frame revolvers, and this 65-5 has the grooved backstrap round butt. It also is the smoother surface variant for the mid 1990s and later Smiths. This one is only lightly scuffed and scoured, mostly on the right side of the frame. Its side plate screws show only minimal stress. We rate this 65-5 as a strong Very Good finishwise, close to Excellent. Scuffing affects about 20 percent of the matte area on the top of the revolver. Michael’s grips are very good, with edge scuffing and some visible wear to the checkering on the right grip panel. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels only 5 to 10 degrees after the cylinder times into place in that mode. On single action, the trigger pull is moderate, about 4 pounds, and crisp. Lateral cylinder wobble is moderate, both with the trigger pulled and the trigger relaxed. Blast effect to the underside of the frame topstrap directly above the forcing cone is more pronounced, about .002 deep at its center, with a crease that traverses about 80 percent of the topstrap width. Trigger and hammer, as the photos show, have the transitional finish, pre-MIM, with traditional hammer nose configuration. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels 10 to 15 degrees after the cylinder times into place in double action. Single action trigger pull is crisp and moderate, about 3.5 pounds; and the hammer only travels 5 degrees or so after the cylinder times into place on single action. Bore is Very Good to Excellent, with some light fouling residue visible near the forcing cone. Cylinder chambers are bright and clean.
