This is the later and improved version of the British SMLE used in WW 2. This rifle has been arsenal refinished at some point in its career: the wood looks great and the metal still retains a lot of its original bluing. The later version of the SMLE had much improved sights. As you can see from the pictures, this model has the dial type ladder sights for a more precise sight picture. The brass butt plate has been polished to a high sheen. There is no rust or pitting that I can see. The action is smooth and solid. The bore appears to have a lot of life left in it as well. This rifle was purchased at an estate sale, so I'm exactly sure of its pedigree, but the person who sold it to me said it had been completely rebuilt at its last arsenal refitting. I don't know that for a fact, but he seemed quite sincere when he said it. The rifle has a number of proof marks on the bolt, receiver, and magazine--however, I don't know the arsenal codes so I can determine their exact meanings. As you may or may not know, these Enfields are becoming very hard to find in any kind of decent condition, and this one is apparently in excellent condition.
