Serial number on this Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector 4th Model Target is S1471xx, dating its manufacture to the Year 1956. Note the possible factory replacement 45 degree cant front sight. We surmise this was replaced at the factory some time in the 1960s or 1970s, some folk just don't like partridge sights. Hammer is .375 Semi-Target color casehardened, and the trigger is .265 serrated service width of the same material. This fine old revolver's surface detractions are only moderate. It has a faint amount of whitening on the lateral sides of the muzzle, and edges of the rod shroud. There is faint spotty strap contact residue on the upper area of the four screw side plate next to the hammer. Grips are likely early Jay Scott, decade appropriate, target stocks made of American Walnut. Lettering and finish is sharp throughout, we do not believe this revolver has ever been modified in any way except for the front sight blade and possibly a hammer replacement. Barrel is 6 1/2 inch – 6 3/8 to be precise. Note the excellent vintage 1950s Smith & Wesson bright blue finish that has strong tones of a royal blue to it. We rate it as Excellent, since 90 percent of its original finish is intact by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. This revolver is excellent mechanically, bore, chambers and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Armorers marks on the grip frame sides include the digits D, 4, 3, and 6 on the left side and the letters V, H, and U on the right side. This is a rare piece, only 5050 were ever made.
