Description:
We are offering for sale a Civil War Contract model 1861 Rifled Musket that was manufactured by Welch, Brown & Co., Norfolk, Ct. in 1863 . This model musket is the basic single shot .58 cal. rifled muzzleloader, iron buttplate, contoured hammer, three barrel bands, ramrod, iron nose cap. Lock is marked "1863" behind the hammer, with the Eagle to the right side of the lock along with the “US/NORFOLK” marking.
40” barrel marked "VP", “1863” and “H” at the breech. Rear sight w/2 leafs graduated for 300 and 500 yards while the buttplate is marked "US". The bore looks good with original rifling remaining. Three barrel bands each marked "U". The condition of the markings is very good as seen in the photos.
The original stock is good with field wear consistent with use. There is a small closed crack radiating from the top lock screw head. The stock is also chipped and cracked in several places near the nose cap and along the right side near the middle barrel band. The makers mark on left side is barely visible but parts of “Norfolk” can still be seen. Buttplate shows oxidation wear.
Overall the condition of this scarce contract rifle is good. The steel components show signs of age wear, freckling and patina. This rifle would make a nice addition to any collection.
